Study Abroad Sans the Glamour: Soldiers Take Classes in Iraq Study Abroad in Iraq? The headline jumped out of the Daily Beast, and I knew I had a story. Until, that is, I read it and learned the average American student cannot register for a semester in Baghdad the way they can in Strasbourg.

Obama's Education Secretary Supports Gay High Schools Yesterday Obama announced Arne Duncan, head of the Chicago school system, as education secretary. Study Shows US Students Lie, Cheat and Steal Thirty percent of high school students in the US have stolen from a store and 64 percent have cheated on a test this year alone, according to a new survey that suggests Americans are apathetic about ethical standards. A Los Angeles-based ethics institute surveyed 29,760 students at 100 randomly selected high schools nationwide, both public and private. Some of the key findings include:

  • One-fifth said they stole something from a friend; 23 percent said they stole something from a parent or other relative.
  • Cheating in school is rampant and getting worse.

New Rules For Tracking High-School Dropouts (Sans Musical) If High School Musical was real (and I wish it was, it would actually have made for fascinating reality TV) at least one kid on the poster wouldn't be tossing any cap at all. High-school dropout rates now show one out of every four students not graduating, and 7,000 students drop out every day. Under new regulations for reporting announced today, schools will have to report graduation rates for all students — including minorities and students with disabilities, which have a dropout rate as high as one in three.
