Thinking outside the fake-news (gift)box last night, Stephen Colbert premiered A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All. John Legend sang about his love of nutmeg, while Jon Stewart took the opportunity to teach Stephen about Hanukkah with his own serenade. Other guests included Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Toby Keith, and Feist.

Just yesterday while I was lamenting that Bill Maher forgot to interview Stephen Colbert (seen here with his wife and daughter at last month's Emmys), he was speaking (with his wife!) at the New Yorker Festival in Manhattan. He's known for giving few interviews and even fewer out of character and probably none with his wife, who puts up with it all, so this was a rare treat.

It appears it wasn't taped, but there are some great recaps. Here are some highlights of the highlights:

On playing Stephen Colbert, the character: "It's not in my nature to be a jerk — but I do enjoy it."
On why he ran for president: He refers to Bill O'Reilly and the egotism of his character: "I couldn't have the presidential election not be about me."
He hesitated before giving Bill O'Reilly the standard warning he tells all his guests — my character is idiot, disabuse me of my ignorance — but then went ahead. O'Reilly seemed unaware of the insult.

The group-effort, let's-have-everybody-host format at last night's Emmys isn't earning raves in the cold light of day, but the election can surely be counted as one of the stars, swiping at least as much stage time as some of the winners despite rumors of a ban. Behold as Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart turn an innocent snack into a juicy metaphor for the political landscape.

Colbert said, “America needs prunes. It may not be a young, sexy plum. Granted, it's shriveled and at times hard to swallow. But this dried-up old prune has the experience we need.” He forgot that prunes also have, er, medicinal qualities. Perhaps we need those too?

Jon Stewart, whose Daily Show won last night for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy series, also had this to say perhaps hinting that whoever wins this fall, the show and the funnies will go on: “I really look forward to the next administration whoever it is. I have nothing to follow that up with. I'm just saying I really look forward to the next administration whoever it is." Stewart and Colbert were gentle here, but the political opinions got much more heated as the night went on.

This I didn't know: Alaska has the highest gas prices in the US? Wow. The average up there in Klondike country is $4.63. California follows pretty closely at $4.50, and Hawaii, Connecticut, and Washington round out the top five.

So where should you be heading to fill up? Missouri is the cheapest at $3.86 (aw! Remember $3 gas! I made a scrapbook of it!) helped along by their record-low gas tax. Oklahoma, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Iowa round out the cheapest five states to fill up. So now that gas stations are having to use up a whole bunch more "4"s to fill their prices signs, where in the world will they get them all?

Though indeed there is real teacher news today, including one Detroit-area educator who was found guilty of having sex with a former 15-year-old student — if that's the alternative, I prefer a little (Peabody-winning!) This substitute teacher was somehow fired in connection with performing a magic trick, and bringing filthy wizardry and sorcery to the classroom by making a toothpick disappear. OK, fair the report is not, but, um. . . the interviews with the parents? Now that's some real magic right there.

Colbert Tells Grads Future's So Bright, Shades Included

Stephen Colbert was a Tiger in spirit yesterday as he spoke to the Princeton graduating class. They presented him with an award, "The Great Princeton Class of 2008 Understandable Vanity Award," mounted appropriately enough, on a mirror. Colbert said it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.

In true Colbert Report form, he told the grads, "you can change the world. Please don't do that, OK? Some of us like the way things are going now." Acknowledging their potential, Colbert said, "I'm scared of you. I can tell you are go-getters. At my college, for instance, no one got out of bed before 11 o'clock."

He saved his biggest skewer for the black-and-orange class jackets — known as "beer jackets" — a mainstay of Princeton culture. Schooling them on the real world he said, "when you leave here, no one will ever, ever want to hear you sing a capella. And those jackets you're wearing, do not wear them to your job interview."

He changed his tune when they presented him with his own.

"In that case," he said, "I take it back. This is a beautiful jacket. Change the world."

Last night on The Colbert Report, Arianna Huffington explained that John McCain's passion for Iraq is "his Viagra." Ariannna, the supreme ruler of the liberal site The Huffington Post, discussed how she fell out of love with her former hero McCain, while promoting her new short-titled book: Right Is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe. The Huffington Post is not shy about its agenda — and love for Barack Obama. The fact that the site features unabashedly left-leaning opinions, often written by public officials or celebrities, probably means you either love it or hate it. I actually spend more time reading the comments, which are often fiery, but surprisingly nuanced.Do you enjoy a regular dose of the Greek-born populous Arianna? Or, do you find The Huffington Post too partisan of a pill to swallow?

Maybe TV news is the fountain of hot?) was on The Colbert Report last night, where he dodged the big nail down about a possible run for Sen. Arlen Specter's seat in 2010.

The Senate-run talk is great, but God bless Colbert, "I swing a harder ball than you"? "You've put me to sleep at 6 o'clock before"? Let it be said here first, forget Matthews — Colbert for Senate!

Hold on to your hats, this is a nerdy one! GoCrossPoliticalBash08 is part of the game phenomenon GoCrossCampus or GXC. It's an online a variation on board games like Risk, and has spawned quite a following on college campuses. That's pretty nerdy, but it gets better: in the political version of the game, players (anyone with an .edu email address can play) are battling a virtual version of the presidential campaign. Who are the big two candidates? Ron Paul and Stephen Colbert.

Want in? Here's how to play:

The rules of GXC are relatively simple. Every player is allocated a number of armies each day and must coordinate attacks, troop movements and defensive maneuvers with teammates. Players can move their armies once each day, and the game software calculates the result of clashes with an algorithm that gives a slight edge to defenders.

And forget talk of superdelegates. Currently Texas is controlled by Ron Paul and 99 armies and California is controlled by Stephen Colbert and his 277 armies. I don't know but they might be onto something. Never mind the Electoral College, this might be the most powerful display of true democracy in the whole campaign.
