SNL Mocks NY Governor's Blindness — Does It Cross the Line?

Being the butt of an SNL parody usually means a politician has secured national recognition, but NY Governor David Paterson was none too pleased when the show mocked his blindness this weekend. In the sketch, the New York governor is lambasted for his past drug use, extramarital affair, and the fact that he's legally blind. Paterson, who said he can take a joke, reacted to the sketch today calling it: A "third-grade depiction of people and the way they look" that could lead others to believe that "disability goes hand in hand with an inability to run a government or business. I run the place I work in, so I don't have to be worried about being discriminated against."

Do you agree with Gov. Paterson that such a depiction could lead to discrimination of the blind?

Live From New York — It's John McCain!

With only days to go until election day, John McCain did what he could to get the SNL bump. While Barack Obama paid millions to appear on major networks during primetime last Wednesday, John McCain and Tina Fey, as Sarah Palin of course, opened Saturday Night Live by hosting a QVC sketch. The original maverick pitched pork knives (to cut the pork) and (blank) commemorative plates to help customers remember the 10 joint town-hall debates Barack Obama did not attend.

McCain came back later during Weekend Update, receiving a mixed reaction from the audience. Were the free sketches worth more than the Obama infomercial, or did it all just make a joke of the campaign too close to voting? Check out the shopping channel appearance — there's even a Heidi Montag shout-out, and a surprise guest!

The costumes were spot-on down to the fetching French braid, and Queen Latifah stepped in quite convincingly as moderator Gwen Ifill — all the details of the Saturday Night Live skewering of the Vice-Presidential Debate were picture perfect. (Even down to Joe Biden calling himself "Joe Biden." Did you catch that on Thursday?) The zinger-iest question re-do? The discussion of gay marriage, from Biden's "visiting them in the hospital is just as good," to Palin's it should be an institution "between two unwilling teenagers." And then there was the talent portion. Oh, yes, it was there — I kind of wish the real debate had had one too! Check out the sketch — are you laughing at the fake version?

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin: Last Frontier of Funny or Fizzled Out?

In case your bedtime is earlier than SNL or you were out doing something more fun last night, here's the Tina Fey as Sarah Palin sketch. She certainly looks the part and it was fun to see her back on the show. . . but was her appearance worth the hype? What do you think of the accent? I did get a kick of the way she delivered the line about the Bush Doctrine, but all in all, how did she do? Is she the Will Ferrell as George Bush of Sarah Palin? Is Piper going to think that's her mommy?

SNL to Premiere With Politics But Not Obama

Tonight's season premiere of Saturday Night Live may have a few surprise political guests to join human-fish-turned-host Michael Phelps. Barack Obama had been going over sketches for his probable cameo, but due to Hurricane Ike he's canceled his appearance on SNL. Guess we won't be able to tell once and for all whether Barack Obama is a hoot, or truly un-funny.

Also set to make a guest appearance is Sarah Palin look-alike Tina Fey. She just needs to work it out with her 30 Rock shooting schedule. Since she already has the glasses, I hope she can make it happen! Are you staying up late to check out SNL?

I decided to open up the Saturday Night Live politics-vault, and ended up finding a gem! In 2002, with the 2000 primaries far behind him and no need to worry about image control, John McCain decided to show television viewers that he can play the "creepy husband" character pretty darn well. SNL's Lorne Michaels Has Politics on the Brain

While Buzz attends the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Hollywood, she's been passing on all things political. Just yesterday, she got inches away from Keith Olbermann (who is "surprisingly very attractive" in person) and on Sunday she took an inside look at Saturday Night Live, which is gearing up for an intense election season schedule, including a Thursday night edition of Weekend Update.

Buzz got the scoop on whether Lorne Michaels, executive producer and co-creator of SNL, finds certain politicians funnier than others. Here's what he had to say:

Who is funnier: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or John McCain?
Avoiding the question, "Our job isn't to get too close. . . . We were accused of just pounding Hillary Clinton at the beginning of the season and then we were accused of being just totally for [her] — so it shifts week to week. But I can tell you that whoever's in power, we're suspicious of."

McCain's Been Working For the Weekends Since February

Besides a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, one rally in April, and some hosting duties at home in Arizona, John McCain has taken the last 20 weekends off.

Each Saturday and Sunday he plans no campaign events and hides from the media. While out of the spotlight, McCain rests up, reviews policy, and privately meets with advisers and contributors, according to Politico. Since McCain admitted he doesn't know how to use a computer, we know he doesn't spend the time catching up on his email.

McCain's commitment to keep his weekends for himself, refreshingly deviates from the nonstop, and often empty, coverage of the campaign. But the Politico story explores the tightrope walk McCain's age (71) presents. By taking weekends off McCain opens himself up to criticism that he doesn't have the energy to be President, but if he gets sick that won't look good either.

While this conscious decision to take a weekly media break might have made sense during the Democratic primary, it may be difficult to maintain during the general election. That's probably why McCain's aides note that he won't be taking as many weekends off this Summer. Will the time off help McCain sprint to the finish, or give Barack Obama a head start?

John McCain gave some sage advice to the Democratic Party on SNL last night. Uh, is bringing back Edwards as a candidate the answer? If y'all can't choose now, hows about some more to choose from!?

Don't choose a candidate at the convention! Making a decision is for suckers! Keep it up in the air! "That would be crazy! Crazy exciting!" I wouldn't vote this appearance funnier than his Barbra Streisand, but cute. He had a fake ad later on in the show, too. . . "jamming Gaydar is not a Federal responsibility." So, Buzz just gave me the scoop on NBC's upcoming Fall schedule.

Saturday Night Live will be bringing a half hour of its "Weekend Update" to Thursday nights beginning Oct. 16. It'll be like Jon Stewart – but live and at primetime!

NBC's president of entertainment thinks "there's nothing better than Saturday Night Live in an election year." Do you agree? Has SNL returned to its political-skewering roots with a Hillary/Obama-fueled renaissance? Would this replace your Daily Show/fake-news fix, or does SNL Thursday Night Live sound a little like reheated leftovers?

SNL seems to be back in the business of serious political skewering. Though I think their big laughs are a little sporadic, they're still pretty current. Coming back from a writers' strike-imposed hiatus stretching back to Nov. 3, Saturday Night Live was back last night with a big revelation: Who would play their spoofy Show-bama. During a send-up of last week's Texas debate (which centered very heavily on the Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, who tons of you found . . . appealing) the casting of Obama was revealed. Comedian Fred Armisen will fill Obama's hope-and-change shoes. After months of speculation as to the casting, some say the show might be courting controversy by not casting a nonblack performer in the role — though the show has a history of casting for funniest rather than most accurate. I think Armisen got the speaking cadence and omnipresent frowny face down, but . . . Here's to hoping he'll have a long time to practice his impersonation! What did you all think? Were you loving the SNL Obama? Oh, and Mike Huckabee — the real Mike Huckabee also dropped by the Weekend Update desk.
