Mediterranean Union Agrees to Rid the Middle East of WMDs

Nicolas Sarkozy, seen below with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, relished his role as host of 43 nations from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, launching his new Mediterranean Union. At the culmination of the meeting held in Paris yesterday, the nations' leaders condemned "terrorism in all forms" and agreed to "pursue a mutually and effectively verifiable Middle East Zone free of weapons of mass destruction."

Sarkozy's brainstorm has achieved the bold initiative of bringing together warring and impoverished nations alongside wealthy and industrialized nations to form the Mediterranean Union. He said at the closing of the summit yesterday, "we dreamed about a Union for the Mediterranean, and now it is a reality."

The G-8 Summit gets underway in Hakkaido, Japan today; a three-day meeting of the leaders of the eight countries invited, plus a representative of the European Union.
Grown from the concept of a forum of the major industrialized democracies after the 1973 oil crisis, more have been invited until 1997 when the last member, Russia, was invited at the initiative of then US President Bill Clinton.

The guest list is at the edge of controversy this year, as major climate issues are at hand, and two of the worst polluters (China and India) aren't invited. Here's who is (top to bottom, left to right):

Real Bullets Used in French Military Demonstration Injuring 17

The French military accidentally used real bullets instead of blanks, during a demonstration this weekend, injuring 17 people, including three children.

The demonstration, intended to showcase hostage-freeing techniques, left a 3-year-old child in critical condition. Chief Bernard Lemaire said the soldier who fired the real bullets has been detained, as the apparent accident has not been ruled out as a criminal act. French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited victims at the Carcassonne hospital and promised punishment for the negligence.

In other French military news — Sarkozy now must face critics who claim he exchanged French independence for American domination by deciding to bring France back under NATO's unified military command, 42 years after Charles de Gaulle pulled France out of full participation. The decision also raises questions about France's attitude toward a unified European Union military policy, separate from NATO.

Should Europe embrace NATO as its military future or pursue an America-free defense policy? As for the bullet incident, I hope the victims in critical condition pull through and the cause of the accident is avoided in the future.

Fancy First Lady Steals Sarkozy's Mideast Peace Talk Thunder?

Though his visit ended amid panic, France's Nicolas Sarkozy's first presidential visit to Israel this week made quite an impression. Sarkozy called on the country to stop settlement in the occupied West Bank, saying Mideast peace depends on Israel dropping its refusal to surrender sovereignty over parts of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinians. As compensation, he assured Israel that it could count on France's support in halting Iran's nuclear program.

Sarkozy praised Israel's democracy and quoted the biblical passage in which God promises the Holy Land to the children of Israel, drawing a mixed review of applause and scowls (from the handful of Arab members). Speaking to parliament he said:

"There cannot be peace without an immediate and complete halt to settlement," he said. "There cannot be peace without recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of two states and the guarantee of free access to the holy places for all religions."

Sarkozy's address follows fluffy weekend coverage of his arrival by the country's newspapers that seemed more preoccupied with his Italian singer First Lady Carla Bruni than his agenda. Israeli Police Officer Kills Himself at Airport An Israeli police officer fatally shot himself Tuesday at an airport departure ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy, sparking fear of an assassination attempt and prompting bodyguards to whisk away Sarkozy and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, officials said. Dark-suited men quickly ushered Sarkozy and his wife up the stairs of their plane. At the same time, security guards with guns drawn rushed Olmert and Israeli President Shimon Peres toward their cars.

In the new book Carla and Nicolas, the True Story readers get an inside look at the seven-month relationship between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Italian singer first-lady wife Carla Bruni.

Carlita and Sarko met at dinner party, which they attended as each other's blind date. Carla's former lover Luc Ferry was there, too. Carla apparently got tipsy, asked the French president for a lift home, and the rest is history! If you wish you had been a fly on the wall, you may be in luck. Apparently Ferry video taped the Sarkozy-Bruni meeting with his phone.

Carla explains that she was "seduced by his physique and his intelligence" and by his "five or six brains which are remarkably irrigated." This has all helped Carla ignore fears that her left-leaning art community companions would reject her for loving the conservative French president.

Meanwhile London's Madame Tussauds unveiled her wax figures of the French ~~playboy~~ president. Check out some of the figure, which is much less controversial than the Hitler planned for Berlin. Non, Non Working! French Strike For a Day

The French — that participated in yesterday's nationwide demonstration in over 120 cities — are not happy with President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to increase the number of required years worked to receive a full pension from 40 to 41. Trains, buses, and underground metros were shut down, and other services, such as mail and radio, were reduced. The French are doing what they can for that extra year of retirement! Sarkozy Slashes Nukes By 33 Percent

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced he is cutting the number of France's airborne nuclear warheads by one-third. The cuts will leave France with fewer than 300 missiles, half of their stockpile from the Cold War. He added that despite the cuts, France is committed to a nuclear weapon's program as a "life insurance" policy.

In a speech dedicating a new nuclear submarine (called the Terrible) Sarkozy said, "by giving this information, France is fully transparent since it has no other weapons than those in its operational stocks. Moreover, I confirm that none of our weapons are targeted at anybody."

Sarko Le Junior Wins in France!

Well at least one Sarkozy didn't get beat up in France's municipal elections this past weekend. Jean Sarkozy, the 21-year-old hottie/son of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, won a seat on a local council, and will represent the Parisian suburb of Neuilly. Jean may have had a name recognition advantage, as his Papa served as the posh suburb's mayor for almost 20 years.

Meanwhile, President Sarkozy's party got pummeled at the polls. The Socialist opposition party won 47.5 percent of the overall vote for the country's municipal councils, while Sarkozy's Union for a Popular Movement won only 40 percent. The French President's popularity has been dwindling recently.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy lost his cool yesterday while working a large crowd at an agricultural fair in Paris. In an event caught on video, an unidentified man told Sarkozy not to touch him, and that Sarkozy was "dirtying" him. Sarkozy blazed back some choice French words, "casse-toi alors, pauvre con, va." Mild and diplomatic translation of this sentiment says "then get out of here, you total jerk."

The words may have been fiery, but they were at least delivered in a manner befitting a suave French leader. Sarkozy's popularity has been sinking in recent weeks, and fellow conservatives worry his reputation will hurt them in next month's municipal elections.
