Top 5 Most Dangerous Cities List Puts New Orleans at No. 1

With a murder every 40 hours, New Orleans crime rate is hard to beat. The latest City Crime Rankings looked at reported incidents of six major crimes to determine the most dangerous dwellings in the US. With a population of only 250,000 that changed drastically after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans came out on top.

Rounding out the list, the top-five cities with the highest crime rate include:

New Orleans, LA
Camden, NJ
Detroit, MI
St. Louis, MO
Oakland, CA

The FBI warns that ranking cities head-to-head fails to paint a realistic picture. In addition, local mayors and law enforcement officials maintain that such a superficial ranking irresponsibly misuses crime data by ignoring complex factors. God bless 24-hours of news for giving us the "something happened, here's a boatload of people to tell you how to think about it" model of reporting. After all, where would we be without pundits? Thinking for ourselves? Well that clearly just won't do at all. So what happens when what we've been told by the experts turns out to be a little, uh, wrong? Salon rounded up a list of "bum calls" from pundits this election. Here are a few:

Everybody Loves Sarah: For a while there in August everything was coming up Palin — leading the heads to speculate she was a masterful pick that was going to snare the Hillary voters and make a big splash with feminists. Polls out this week however show that 60 percent of women under 50 have negative feelings about her.
Steve Schmidt Rules: After McCain topped the polls following the convention, the world beat a path to strategist Steve Schmidt's door. But with the decision to suspend the campaign and focus on the day to day rather than building a brand, the strategy seems to be coming up shorter than expected

Top 10 Products That Scream All-American . . . But Aren't

What do Budweiser, Church's Chicken, and Toll House cookies have in common? Not that they're the fixins of a perfect three-course meal (or that they're all brown, though that occurred to me judging from the pic) these goodies all made The List Universe's list of "Top 10 American Icons That Are Not American." We took a peek at 10 decidedly Made-in-the-USA products a while back — comparing the two lists, it seems like Firestone Tires (Japan) are the anti-Harley Davidson (USA.)

Also on the list of "you're not from around here, are you?" Dial soap, Holiday Inn, and 7-Eleven. The stories behind the products are pretty fetch: for instance, Church's Chicken was invented across the street from the Alamo, but was sold in 2004 to an Islamic venture capital firm in Bahrain. The company doesn't invest in any businesses who deal in pork or porn among other items prohibited by Sharia law, a position that's gotten the business sued by franchise owners.

Lonely Planet Releases List of Top 10 World Cities

If you're dying to get out of Dodge, you're in luck. The Lonely Planet series of travel guides has just released its list of Top 10 World Cities. One entry is causing a few raised eyebrows — including mine. Glasgow, Scotland has made its way onto the list despite its not-too-distant reputation for rough neighborhoods, gangs, and general dereliction. When I went looking for photos, indeed most of them told that story.

The guide paints a rosier picture of a city resurrected. It says: "Forget castles, kilts, bagpipes and tartan. You come for the cocktails, cuisine and designer chic (plus the legendary native wit). Glasgow has shaken off its shroud of industrial soot and shimmied into a sparkling new designer gown."

The Lonely Planet travel editor seconds that notion saying, "The time has come for Lonely Planet to let one of its worst-kept secrets out: Glasgow's got everything. We're delighted to highlight such a fun, stylish city." While some say celebration is too soon in a city "more violent than New York and sicker than parts of Iraq," we can hope that the Planet folks have their finger on the pulse of a trend of improvement.

Debt Clock Maxes Out & Five Historic Financial Meltdowns

The national debt came up last night at the debate, with Obama pointing out that it's doubled since 2000. Yikes. The famous debt clock in New York City, the one that calculates what we owe right before your very eyes is feeling the squeeze — literally. The counter, put up in in 1989, just ran out of space to calculate the debt as it passed $10 trillion. Oops. I know it seems all gloom and doom but how does what's happening now stack up? Here's a quick and dirty look at economic uh-ohs through the ages:

The Panic of 1907: After a 25 percent decline in the market left investors scared and pulling money out, and the government dependent on JP Morgan to help stop the domino effect, the government created the Federal Reserve System.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929: Over the course of three days, three times the normal amount of shares were traded causing prices to tumble. On Black Monday and Tuesday, the market lost 13 and 12 percent respectively. That week's losses were $30 billion, 10 times more than government budget and more than the cost of WWI. When it reached bottom in July 1932 the market had lost 89 percent and would take 25 years to recover.

Good News Out of Africa: The Ten Best Governed Countries

Amid worsening economic news flying at us almost constantly, there is some good news and it’s coming from a surprising corner of the globe: Africa. The continent that has been the metaphor for human misery because of continual wars, poverty, and famine in some respects is recording healthier economic growth than in the industrialized world according to the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF estimates that Africa’s economy may expand by 5 percent this year and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reports that a bigger portion of money entering Africa since 2006 has been investment rather than aid. Even more optimistic is that the Mo Ibrahim Foundation found that 31 out of 48 sub-Saharan African countries, governance is improving. Most improved over the past year was Liberia which saw more than a quarter of a million of its own citizens perish in two civil wars between 1989 and 2003, but has now risen six places to 38th.

The best bit is the 21 item "User's Guide," filled with tips, tidbits, and pieces from everyone from Ted Kennedy advocating for his Serve America Act to Miley Cyrus on starting young, the list is full of unique ways to volunteer. If you've got time to spare, here are five ways you can serve America too:

Citizen Schools:
The program has 3,200 adult volunteers running after-school programs for 4,500 kids at middle schools in 21 cities. Projects include building solar cars, and trying out their legal skills in mock trials.

Giving just one day, this year on Sept. 27, the ServiceNation coalition is hosting more than 1,600 service events planned across all 50 states.

Creationism is, pardon the expression, creating quite a stir this election. With 66 percent of the US believing that the world is less than 10,000 years old, and 16 percent of biology teachers being creationists, a vice presidential candidate who's been linked to the c-word, and even Obama rolling out faith-based merchandise, the issue of belief is big. One UK preacher says of the growth, "Science does not have to be taught in conflict with faith or religion. I believe the current debate over creationism versus evolution is beginning to draw more and people over to our side of the argument . . . evolution is a world-view that leads to futility. From Factory Town to Forgotten: Top 10 US Cities in Decline

Ohio and Michigan may be key battleground states this election perhaps because they have the most to gain. In the list of fastest dying American cities, Ohio scored four slots and Michigan took two — it appears in these declining Rust Belt towns, there's nowhere to go but up.

What factors peg a town as "dying?" Dwindling populations, higher than average unemployment, and stagnant economies all combine to signal bad news for a city. The automotive industry has had the biggest impact on the trend, where the Michigan cities of Flint and Detroit (pictured) have seen unemployment approach 10 percent.

Though the cities on the list aren't facing the crushing real estate landscape that Miami, Las Vegas and Phoenix are seeing, it's hardly good news — the prices never climbed there to begin with. The one bright spot is that a survey shows that almost every city's economy in the US grew between 2001 and 2005; those making the list just grew at a much more depressed rate, some well below 1 percent. It almost seems unfair — being able to argue policy while looking flawless is an art, and The Hill rounds up the 50 prettiest politics wonks every year, and publishes a much anticipated list of the winners. Including a police officer, a politician's wife, and a Congressman, the list is cannily split 50-50, Republicans to Democrats. Let's meet them:

Tulani Elisa, 24, a Democratic legislative assistant who says, "I'm very clumsy."

Brecke Latham, a 28-year-old Republican who says she would date a Democrat if the opportunity arose. "I believe you can cross party lines for friendship and legislation."

This I didn't know: Alaska has the highest gas prices in the US? Wow. The average up there in Klondike country is $4.63. California follows pretty closely at $4.50, and Hawaii, Connecticut, and Washington round out the top five.

So where should you be heading to fill up? Missouri is the cheapest at $3.86 (aw! Remember $3 gas! I made a scrapbook of it!) helped along by their record-low gas tax. Oklahoma, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Iowa round out the cheapest five states to fill up. So now that gas stations are having to use up a whole bunch more "4"s to fill their prices signs, where in the world will they get them all?

With Italy's new laws against sleeping, eating, drinking, and singing in public all aimed at making the place more pleasant (or less, if you fancy a chianti and snooze al fresco) you'd think it'd be in the top two European countries with the best quality of life. Not so amigos, as Bush would say.

Let's start at the bottom: The poor UK has the lowest quality of life in Europe — even though Brits earn the most — according to research released yesterday.

That money can't buy them happiness — they pay a king's ransom for essential goods: 18 percent above the average for diesel, 49 percent more for gas, and 5 percent more for electricity. Life expectancy in jolly old England is the third-lowest at 78.9 years, and the constantly gray sky might be a culprit: Britain gets 80 percent less sunshine than Spain, leading more than 40,000 people to flee in 2006.

They might have run right to Spain, which claims the number one slot among those studied, offering the best quality of life in Europe — even though salaries are below average. Old number two is France thanks to their unbelievably great vacation policy, at 40 days per year.

Which British Monarch Deserves the Failure Crown?

While Americans only have 43 leaders to rate historically, the Brits have many more centuries of eccentric monarchs to discuss and criticize.

British historians want to figure out which monarch was the biggest failure. King George III didn't make the list, since I guess the Brits can't decide whether to thank or blame him for losing the American colonies.

Here are the credentials of the top three royal losers. Who should take the crown as Britain's worst monarch?

Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567) aka "Mary Queen of Murder Plots " — Her involvement in the murder of her husband forced her into exile in England. Once there, she was imprisoned for 19 years, and eventually executed for plotting to kill the Queen of England.
Edward II (1307- 1327) aka "King Pay Back's a Bi*ch" — After losing a war with Scotland he imprisoned his estranged wife. But, his wife got the last laugh, as her army later imprisoned him and forced him to abdicate the throne for incompetence.
George IV (1820-1830) aka "The Playboy Prince" — Known for his excessive lifestyle and womanizing, he married his cousin to clear his debts. He went on to ban his estranged cousin/wife from his coronation.

Eight New Wonders of the Natural World Added to List

Joining Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, and Victoria Falls UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) has named eight new cultural and natural wonders of the world. They have been added to the already prominent list, which currently has 878 sites from 145 different countries including 679 cultural, 174 natural, and 25 mixed landmarks.

Behold the wonderment of the new eight additions:

Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Nova Scotia, Canada): These cliffs are considered a superb site to understand the Coal Age (300 million years ago). These rocks have seen the first reptiles in earth’s history.
Mount Sanqingshan National Park (China): Selected for its natural beauty, the park features unusual granite rock formations and suspended walking trails.
Lagoons of New Caledonia: Reef Diversity and Associated Ecosystems (French South Pacific possessions) — diverse coral reef ecosystems and fish life.
Surtsey (Iceland): A newly formed island which arrived between 1963 and 1967 from a volcanic eruption, and has since given a window into how plants and animals colonized various land masses.

Five Things John McCain Needs to Do to Get Elected President

Though John McCain has just pulled ahead among that all important demographic — pet owners — when it comes down to the whole shebang, November's enchilada, it's neck-and-neck. According to Gallup, Obama is polling at 46 percent, and McCain at 44 percent.

One Republican columnist over at Politico has figured out what McCain needs to do to tip the scales toward victory this fall. Though Santa he ain't, here are the five things McCain has to make a list of and check twice in order to beat Barack Obama:

He should take a page from the Republican party’s founder: Abraham Lincoln. He believed that less government worked best and if McCain presses this point, the delineation between Obama and himself will give Americans a clear choice.
McCain must talk to our enemies. As another great Republican, Teddy Roosevelt said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” McCain must explain to Americans that he is willing to talk to Iran, North Korea or Cuba.
House cleaning. (Isn't this on everyone's to-do list?) McCain needs to rid the GOP of age-old party hacks who are still fighting the battles of the 80s. Juice up some new blood with new ideas.

Which Countries Are Most Corrupt? Not New Zealand, Denmark

Money could very well be the root of all evil — though in the latest study of corrupt countries, it's actually the lack of money that sparks trouble. The new report by Transparency International found that in two-fifths of the world's nations, corruption continues to intensify — a trend that can be traced to economic realities. In the countries found to be the most corrupt, 40 percent are classified by the World Bank as low income.

Transparency International's rankings range on a scale from 10 (on the up-and-up) to 1 (rampant corruption). How common is corruption? Of the 180 countries surveyed, 132 of them had scores below a 5. Other factors that contribute to a cloudy ethical picture are weak governments and conflict. The chairman of Transparency International says, "Countries torn apart by conflict pay a huge toll in their capacity to govern. With public institutions crippled or nonexistent, mercenary individuals help themselves to public resources, and corruption thrives."

Another troublesome mix? Weak government plus plentiful natural resources, like in Equatorial Guinea where 30 percent of the newly discovered oil profits go straight to government officials' wallets. To see which countries ranked where,

Look What's on the Preservation List of 11 Endangered Places

The National Trust for Historic Preservation just released a list of 11 endangered sites chosen from almost 70 nominees. The list's goal is to protect significant buildings and locations. Of the approximately 200 places listed by the organization in the past 20 years, only six have been lost. The head of the Trust says, "The 11 represent the different kinds of historic places in different parts of the country. It's a representative list." Take a peek at where they're trying to save.

Boy do I love a list. A who's better than whom, ranked for the world to see. Time magazine's list of 100 most-influential people dropped today — they've got it separated into categories like Leaders and Revolutionaries, and Heroes and Pioneers, lest we get our Mariah Carey confused with our Sheik Mohammed al-Maktoum. The best part is to see who wrote whose blurb — Rob Reiner wrote Hillary's. Here are the first five listed in the leaders category — they oh so fairly included all three presidential candidates. Chin up, Mr. President Bush, sir! It's not all bad! OK, yes, 98 percent of historians think your presidency has been a failure, but that's just a silly survey. I found an amazing list of the Top Ten Worst Presidents, and you're not even on it!

There are a whole slew of scandals (Teapot Dome, Black Friday) an impeachment (nope, not him — think way back) a Great Depression even greater than the one we're hurtling into now, and a Folly! You haven't had an official folly yet! Get crackin'!

Here are the top (worst?) five from the hilarious and not historically unsound list of top ten worst:

James Buchanan (oops Dred Scott...)
Warren G. Harding (there's your Teapot Dome!)
Franklin Pierce (Kansas-Nebraska Act?)
Richard Nixon (Ohh, Watergate.)
Andrew Johnson (And we have impeachment!)

So you see, Mr. President sir, there's a whole lot of history just as bad as what you're up against. But take a second to read the list, will you? There are quite a few months left of your big job! Let's learn and laugh together!
