Just Torturing Yourself? Interrogator Calls Brutality Ineffective

Matthew Alexander, if that's his real name (it's not), says that the qualities that make a good terrorist interrogator are the same things that make a good American, and those qualities don't include a knack for physical torture. He should know, because he served as a US military interrogator in Iraq, and wrote a book all about how to break a terrorist.

Last night on the Daily Show, Alexander explained that it's counterproductive to torture terrorists even in ticking time-bomb scenarios. Alexander says psychology, not brutality, more effectively extracts crucial information.

He also learned that a sense of humor aids interrogation, because it helps build a relationship of trust with the suspect. Hey! Maybe we should send Jon Stewart over to Guantanamo Bay to joke (not choke) some information out of detainees! Check out the interview, and tell me what you think about his thoughts torture.

John Legend sang about his love of nutmeg, while Jon Stewart took the opportunity to teach Stephen about Hanukkah with his own serenade. Other guests included Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Toby Keith, and Feist.

While opponents of California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, protest carrying signs that say "Separate Is Never Equal," they failed to find effective allies in other traditionally marginalized groups. Sixty-nine percent of African-Americans voted for Proposition 8. Thus, high turnout among that demographic eager to vote for Barack Obama also led to a defeat for proponents of marriage equality. On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart discussed Tuesday night's irony: America elected its first African-American president, as California wrote discrimination into its constitution.

Jon Stewart Stands Up For Fake Americans

Last week in North Carolina Sarah Palin said, "We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation." In what may have been her "cling-to-guns" moment, Sarah Palin potentially alienated the large portion of America that does not live in small towns.

Some critics say Palin's comments were polarizing at best, and perhaps at worst a veiled attempt to say real America is white, not multi-ethnic like the cities. Jon Stewart found a positive edge – if McCain loses the "American" election, he can still be president of the real America that matters. Despite his attempt at silver lining, Palin's comments obviously upset Jon, who also said on last night's show: "I guess if you're from New York City and you signed up to fight in Iraq and died, it doesn't count."

Politics Take Center Stage at the Emmys: The Real Winner?

The group-effort, let's-have-everybody-host format at last night's Emmys isn't earning raves in the cold light of day, but the election can surely be counted as one of the stars, swiping at least as much stage time as some of the winners despite rumors of a ban. Behold as Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart turn an innocent snack into a juicy metaphor for the political landscape.

Colbert said, “America needs prunes. It may not be a young, sexy plum. Granted, it's shriveled and at times hard to swallow. But this dried-up old prune has the experience we need.” He forgot that prunes also have, er, medicinal qualities. Perhaps we need those too?

Jon Stewart, whose Daily Show won last night for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy series, also had this to say perhaps hinting that whoever wins this fall, the show and the funnies will go on: “I really look forward to the next administration whoever it is. I have nothing to follow that up with. I'm just saying I really look forward to the next administration whoever it is." Stewart and Colbert were gentle here, but the political opinions got much more heated as the night went on.

Lighten Up! Tony Blair on Inexplicable Friendship With Bush

Last night on the Daily Show Jon Stewart quipped with Tony Blair, the man who ran Britain for 10 years. With a veil of comedy, Jon could ask the ex-prime minister provocative questions such as "How did (Bush) bring (Iraq) up?. . . Did he say: 'Hey man, you know who we should invade?'" The answers provided insight as to why Blair got on board for Iraq and how he assesses his legacy. Blair said that although he stands by Bush and the Iraq invasion, he never "took the view that people who disagree with it were stupid or misguided or had bad intentions."

Jon and Tony also chatted about the role of religion in politics, international relations, and their personal lives. The former leader discussed his recent conversion to Catholicism along with how UK politicians consider their religious lives distinct from their public persona, a privacy British voters are happy to oblige. The Daily Show Live! Plus, Jon Stewart Serves Karl Rove, Hard

With a ramped up convention, comes amped up comedy. The Daily Show was out in full-force yesterday, with Samantha Bee interviewing the more creatively dressed delegates. In this scene she was doing a little role-play, pretending to be Bristol Palin while the lovely delegate played Sarah. Hilarity ensued.

My favorite part of this video? The women behind me while I was filming having this conversation: "What news show is this?" "I don't know." "Oh, I think it's that Daily thing." "What? Oh, you mean that show all the kids watch?" Ha. And not 10 minutes before, in that very spot, Karl Rove strode past me — he might have escaped my camera, but he didn't escape Jon Stewart on last night's Daily Show. Lighten Up: Rappers — They're Just Like Republicans! Right?

Who loves Hummers? Rappers and Republicans apparently! After Rep. Virgil Goode took to his Fourth of July parade a gassy Hummer perhaps cementing his pimpness, The Daily Show took note and cooked up this game "Republican or Rapper?"

How are they alike? A love of money and guns (and some dicier reasons) according to the clip, but then this little parallel I uncovered: A prominent place on court dockets:

Rapper DMX (yep, the same one who recently learned a very important fact about the election) just pleaded not guilty to charges of theft and then plugged his upcoming album, in rap-form. Brilliant!

John McCain's having a little contest over on his website letting us vote on his new campaign poster. The finalists are up now, check out the top 10 designs submitted by supporters. Fun! But the buzz around the Internet today is over the giant head in the clouds, shining almighty heaven motif of choice #1. Talking Points Memo posted it saying, "it's lucky for McCain that Barack Obama is the one with a hubris problem. Otherwise, this McCain poster in support of his campaign to be elected God might raise some eyebrows. . . ." I giggled.
Speaking of Obama's (perceived! By comedians!) Jesus-complex, last night on The Daily Show, in the segment following Obama's semester abroad, titled "Obama Quest: The Legend Begins, Continues" Jon Stewart mentioned a little side trip Obama had to make to Bethlehem. It seems a certain manger from a very early point in his past needed visiting . . . watch and see.

Eight Legs? It's Not That Girl in India, It's Baracknophobia!

Though the infant born with eight limbs in India just had successful surgery to remove her extra appendages, a multilegged creature of a different sort showed up on The Daily Show this week. Apparently, the phobia, classified scientifically (it's true — they're doing studies) as "the irrational fear of hope" has wormed its way into to the very fibers of the Obama campaign. OK. They're not doing studies.

Skewering both the incident this week where the Obama campaign moved some Muslim supporters out of a picture with the candidate, ("Muslim-adjacent" is apparently a presidential deal-breaker) as well as the media coverage of it, Stewart has a few more faux-tos the Obama camp doesn't want you to see. I don't care if he is punching that baby, it's a darn cute kid. Do you have a little Baracknophobia of your own?

Daily Show Says, In: Historic, Out: Inevitable, Sad: Green Wall

Not only a big night for the Democrats, Tuesday's Barackification was a big finish line at the ol' Daily Show. Jon Stewart summed it all up, clip-style. Including my favorite, "I'd love to get Abraham Lincoln's reaction to this," says Olbermann. Apparently Lincoln would say "I hate theaters!" Stewart does make a larger point —"naysayers" is a great word. I'm bringing it back ASAP. It will be the new fist-bump.

And then the vintage, historic montage of pundits declaring Hillary inevitable. What happened? Theories of course, abound. Ohhh, and McCain's unfortunate speechifying got the treatment. I can't watch. It hurts too much. The one thing that is clear, now that the Tuesday night confetti has settled, and that big green backdrop has been dismantled, it's going to be a good year for Mr. Stewart.

I think he may have been trying to poke editorial fun at John McCain, but all I could picture was that scene with the gravy boat (ack!) and the moment when he said we can stop casualties by pulling out of Iraq, and I wondered to myself how fast it would take a missile to get here from the Middle East. Other than that, hi-larity!

On the eve of the big rumble in PA, Barack Obama joined Jon Stewart via satellite for a kind of serious discussion — by Daily Show standards anyway. I kept trying to see if Jon had Larry King hiding under his desk feeding him questions. If you're a fan, you'll dig it. It's a two-parter — the giggles come at the end of each.

SNL Coming to Thursdays for Presidential Election

So, Buzz just gave me the scoop on NBC's upcoming Fall schedule.

Saturday Night Live will be bringing a half hour of its "Weekend Update" to Thursday nights beginning Oct. 16. It'll be like Jon Stewart – but live and at primetime!

NBC's president of entertainment thinks "there's nothing better than Saturday Night Live in an election year." Do you agree? Has SNL returned to its political-skewering roots with a Hillary/Obama-fueled renaissance? Would this replace your Daily Show/fake-news fix, or does SNL Thursday Night Live sound a little like reheated leftovers?
