Bush White House: We Don't Need Sweeping Pardons

The Bush administration has signaled that it won't be necessary to issue pardons for officials involved in harsh interrogation, even while the incoming Obama administration won't rule out an investigation. White House officials believe that legal opinions written by the Justice Department clear interrogators of any wrongdoing.

In September, Joe Biden said that the Obama administration would pursue appropriate charges against Bush officials not out of vengeance, but out of the need to preserve the notion that no one is above the law.

If Bush grants a blanket pardon to top officials, the public (and history) might consider it an admission that criminal activity plagued his presidency. Even so, do you expect to see preemptive pardons, for crimes such as torture or illegal wiretapping, before Bush leaves office?

"Gird your loins!" Yeah! My favorite quote of last week made it into the opening of SNL last night where Joe Biden and John Murtha attempted to remove their feet from their mouths for certain "crises" and "redneck" statements. Biden just blusters on with the thought. "Our military may invade Pakistan, or surrender to the Chinese. We may sell Hawaii to Saudi Arabia or just destroy it, so it can't fall in to North Korean hands. But just reserve your judgment — we know what we're doing!" Really? Let's watch and just see about that. Biden's bombastic soothsaying continues, "If Barack Obama is elected, we will have a crisis. And when this crisis hits, and it will! In the second week of February, we may do some weird things." It's followed by a list of other crazy things Biden could say when he should know better. Punctuated with Murtha trying to get a word in edgewise about how he didn't mean redneck, he meant racist and ignorant to the modern world, it was a cavalcade of "not helping! Stop talking while you're ahead!" moments. Just like the campaign itself. Ah, philosophy on a Sunday morning. Also in the political scheme of things, Maya Rudolph made her debut as Michelle Obama in a sketch about the variety hour Obama is going to turn his 30-minute television spot into this week. I hope it's true! It looks better than the Carol Burnett Show and Hee Haw! combined.

The biggest knock against Biden during discussions on whether he would make a good vice presidential nominee was that his mouth tends to get him in trouble. Today's New York Times outlined the known state of all four candidates' health. While it dedicated a section to each, the report clearly raised new questions about John McCain's chances of melanoma recurrence.

Here is a look at how the paper of record summarized the medical records:

McCain: Wounds from untreated injuries and torture while a POW mean McCain may eventually need joint replacements. Inconsistencies about the severity of McCain's melanoma skin cancer, make the probability of recurrence unknown. A reclassification of severity, called for by some experts, would change his statistical odds for survival at 10 years from about 60 percent to 36 percent. He has had no recurrence for eight years; but the 10th anniversary, which would be in 2010, is an important benchmark.
Obama: Obama’s campaign released a one-page letter from his doctor citing Obama’s “excellent health," last May and a series of test results last week. Obama has one medical issue, which is a difficulty in stopping smoking. Obama began smoking 20 years ago, trying several times since to quit. Obama, who decided to quit before running for president, has used Nicorette gum “with success," according to his doctor.

Looks like the Obama-Biden ticket is starting to close in on the coveted fashionista vote. Vogue took a chance in its November issue, which will hit newsstands over the next week, by titling a feature story "All the Vice President's Women." Cute! Let's hope it's not wildly prophetic, because the profile is really about one woman — Jill Biden, the would-be vice president's wife. Second Lady?

A representative for Vogue spoke to the Huffington Post and said of the cover line, "Win or lose, we thought it was a clever cover line that would serve to get people's attention." I've written entire posts to fit headlines I've come up with, so I understand the urge, but putting it in print and on the cover seems a lot like buying a dress one size too small.

The costumes were spot-on down to the fetching French braid, and Queen Latifah stepped in quite convincingly as moderator Gwen Ifill — all the details of the Saturday Night Live skewering of the Vice-Presidential Debate were picture perfect. (Even down to Joe Biden calling himself "Joe Biden." Did you catch that on Thursday?) The zinger-iest question re-do? The discussion of gay marriage, from Biden's "visiting them in the hospital is just as good," to Palin's it should be an institution "between two unwilling teenagers." And then there was the talent portion. Oh, yes, it was there — I kind of wish the real debate had had one too! Check out the sketch — are you laughing at the fake version?

Whoa. That debate was like running a half-marathon at a 5k pace. It was hotly anticipated and proved to be even more intense than expected. Your fantastic comments during the debate came almost faster than the candidates' answers themselves. Here's what we thought of the big #2 showdown:

Citizen:
This was a fast and furious debate. It barely paused long enough to get questions uttered before zooming on. Perhaps the questions over Gwen Ifill's motives were wildly unnecessary as she was competent though mostly periphery to the sheer pace. The questions she asked were fair and the candidates only really loosely followed them anyway. Sarah Palin was firmly self-assured as soon as she settled in, and both Palin and Biden hammered home a 100-mile-an-hour back-up of the arguments for their respective presidential candidates, exactly what they were supposed to do.

Joe Biden brought a similar performance to what we're used to seeing from him, the wild card of course was Palin. Her grasp of foreign policy facts was bullet-point perfect tonight, and her accessibility and — I'll say it — personality really shone through. Republicans were facing an uphill climb, stymied a bit by recent poll numbers and Palin's interview performances — Palin took that challenge, and especially in the first half of the debate, hit it home.

India Nuclear Deal Approved:
In addition to passing the Bailout Bill last night which caused the European markets to rise, the US Senate voted 86-13 to approve a nuclear deal with India. The vote moves to end a 30-year ban on nuclear trade with India. The deal gives India access to civilian nuclear technology which critics say will expand its nuclear industry without having to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Suicide Bombers Strike End of Ramadan:
In Baghdad as Muslims marked the close of Ramadan, suicide bombers attacked two Shi'ite mosques during morning prayers, killing at least 20 people. The attacks were part of a second wave of violence this week culminating in the Id al-Fitr feast. No one has claimed responsibility but some in the crowd believe Sunni extremists were to blame.

Vice Presidential Debate Tonight:
Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden face off in their only debate tonight in St. Louis, MO. The event starts at 9 p.m. ET and will be moderated by PBS's Gwen Ifill. The debate has been much anticipated and we'll be gearing up for it today, as well as here tonight live-commenting during the debate.

Remember Him? What's Biden Been Up To — Is He Ready?

Remember when we were all waiting for the magical text message to come? Cozy memories, right? And then we all found out Obama's VP pick was Joe Biden and then the Palin train came to town, and well . . . have people just forgotten him all together? He's out there alright, and saying things that deserve at least as careful a look as Palin's time with Katie Couric. To wit:

On Sunday, Biden let loose a fiery tirade saying, "John McCain said he'd follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell. Well, let me tell you something: President Barack Obama will follow him to where he lives and then send him to hell." Zap?

But then there's this: In an interview also with CBS airing last week, Biden painted a lovely picture of how FDR had spoken to the country on television in 1929 to comfort them about the stock market crash. Even though Herbert Hoover was president in 1929 and no one had a TV until 10 years later. Did we hear much about that?
He forcefully declared the Democratic ticket against clean coal when Obama is for it, sparking a rash of ads.
And then this one from a debate last year, interesting when juxtaposed against the Hillary "sniper fire" from this year. "Let's start telling the truth . . . you better have helicopters ready to take those 3,000 civilians inside the Green Zone, where I have been seven times and shot at." He later downgraded that statement to "I was near where a shot landed."

Did Joe Biden gaffe again? In a train-based interview with Katie Couric, she asked Biden about an ad being run by the Obama/Biden campaign mocking McCain's technological capabilities. Biden said of the ad, "I thought that was terrible by the way. I didn’t know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it”

The ad uses a disco ball and Rubik's cube to paint McCain as "out of touch" and says he "doesn't know how to use a computer," and "admits he can't send an email." What prompted Biden's discomfort with the ad? Perhaps this quote from a Forbes piece in 2000:

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the US Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden said today that paying higher taxes is a patriotic thing for wealthy Americans to do. Acknowledging the plan for a higher tax rate for those making over $250,000, Biden said on Good Morning America, "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

Stocks Tumble Despite Bailout:
US stocks hit a three-year low despite the $85 billion government bailout of insurance giant AIG. Acknowledging continuing concern, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said, "Our economy has the strength to be able to deal with these shocks." President Bush has canceled a trip today to focus on the economy. He's expected to speak at 10:15 ET.

175 Arrests in Drug Ring:
US officials announced arrests of 175 people in connection with Mexico's largest drug ring. The arrests took place this week after 15 months of investigation into the Gulf Cartel, a group which plays a major part in the levels of violence in Mexico. A DEA spokesperson said, “We successfully completed a hard-hitting, coordinated and massive assault on the powerful and extremely violent Gulf Cartel."

Here's a rundown on how Biden met questions about the surge, abortion, religion, and the latest addition to the race, Sarah Palin.

On Sunni/Shia cooperation in Anbar:
It's still — it's a big problem, Tom. . . . We're paying 300 bucks a month to each of those guys. Now the problem has been and the promise was made by Maliki that they (Shia) would be integrated into the overall military. That's a process that is beginning in fits and starts now, but it's far from over.
On a timed withdrawal of American troops:
Whether or not the surge worked is almost irrelevant now. We're in a new deal. What is the administration doing? They're doing what Barack Obama has suggested over 14 months ago, turn responsibility over and draw down our troops. . . . The only guy in America out of step is John McCain. John McCain's saying no timeline.
On Iraq, the surge, and political reconciliation:
The surge helped make that (reduction in sectarian violence) possible. What made it possible in Anbar province is they did what I'd suggested two and a half years ago: gave local control. They turned over and they said to the Sunnis in Anbar province, "We promise you, don't worry, you're not going to have any Shia in here. There's going to be no national forces in here. We're going to train your forces to help you fight al-Qaeda." . . . What you had was the awakening. The awakening was not an awakening by us, it was an awakening of the Sunnis in Anbar province willing to fight.

Should Next President Prosecute Bush Administration Crimes?

This week an ordinary citizen asked Joe Biden if the Obama Administration would "pursue violations that have been made against our Constitution by the present administration." His answer? Yes.Speaking about the efforts of the congressional Democrats to investigate the Bush Administration, VP nominee Biden said: What they're doing is the right thing. They're not making false accusations, they're not making unfounded accusations, they're collecting data. They're subpoenaing records. They're building the file. And they're going through it and will go through it with a fine tooth comb. If there has been a basis on which you could pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued. Not out of vengeance, not out of retribution. Out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no one, no attorney general, no president, no one is above the law.

Obama has said that he will ask his attorney general to distinguish between "genuine crimes" and "really bad policies." He said in April: "[I]f crimes have been committed, they should be investigated. You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt, because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve."While it shouldn't surprise anyone when leaders vow to hold criminals accountable, political allegiances are sure to make this vow unusually controversial. Undecided Americans watched Sarah Palin's speech last night in part to figure out whether they are comfortable with her being "a heartbeat away" from the presidency. For some, this question takes on extra urgency because John McCain is 72-years-old. Politico consulted life-insurance experts to assess the likelihood that a Vice President Palin or a Vice President Biden would become President. According to the Social Security Administration’s tables, a man aged 72 years and 67 days (McCain's age on election day 2008) is almost ten times more likely to die before January 20, 2013, than a man aged 47 years and 92 days (Obama’s age on election day). Obama's cigarette use doesn't increase his likelihood too much, either.Of course, statistics derived from the entire population cannot predict the fate of McCain or Obama. Even so, do you consider whether or not a candidate will live through the term when you're making up your mind?Source

Egaffes! Was Joe Biden's Freudian Slip For Real?

Now that the Democratic convention has come to a close, one question remains. In his big speech this week Democratic vice-presidential nominee, Joe Biden, tripped over his words in the most elegant way. So elegant, it's left us wondering if it was scripted or in fact pure gaffe.

He said, "That's the America that George Bush has left us, and that's the America we'll continue to get if George . . . excuse me, if John McCain is elected president. . . . Freudian slip! . . . Freudian slip." Was it?

Egaffes! Was Joe Biden's Freudian Slip For Real?

For reals. And it was a pretty good save, to boot.

So staged! But who cares? It added to the Bush-McCain connection.

I don't know. I just want Obama to appear overhead like the Wizard of Oz again.

Day 3: The Big Vote, Clinton, Biden, and Big Obama Surprise!

Want to know the most American I've ever felt? When Hillary released her votes and Nancy Pelosi moved for a vote to make Barack Obama the nominee, and the arena full of citizens erupted into applause and song, moving as one mass of humanity inspired by the sheer force of democracy. It doesn't matter who you're voting for at that point; when you're in the arena, it just matters that you're all voting, and you're proud as hell of that right.

The Pepsi Center tonight was filled with citizens, celebrities, and elected officials packed in together and who are all equal come election day. The deafening roar that greeted Bill Clinton's speech (I overheard this afterward: "Did you hear Bill speak?" "I sure did. He's one-a the best presidents we ever had." Priceless.), then the Spielberg-directed video, John Kerry, the surprisingly touching intro of Joe Biden by his son Beau, culminating in the the firm clear message from vice presidential candidate Biden. When he said, "John McCain is my friend. We've traveled the world together . . . but I profoundly disagree with the direction John wants to take this country, from Afghanistan to Iraq," finishing with, "This is America's time!" the air in the arena was an odd combination of festival and gravity. Excitement over what could be, and the importance and weight of that task. The speech climaxed strongly and left the crowd ready for tomorrow.

THEN! Obama came out onstage!!! What did you make of the surprise? The speeches?

So apparently both Kaine and Bayh have been given the "thanks for playing" calls, and the Secret Service has been sent to Joe Biden's Delaware home. And don't get me started on the charter plane heading from Chicago Midway to Delaware. Oh, Joe-mentum baby. It's on.
