
Canada's Harper Pledges Cooperation After Election Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday he will reach out to all parties during the global financial meltdown after his Conservative Party won in national elections but fell short of a parliamentary majority. Harper had called Tuesday's elections early in hopes of getting his party a majority, and in doing so he became the first major world leader to face voters since the financial crisis.

TV Polls: Livni Wins Ruling Party Primary in Israel TV exit polls say Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has won a clear victory in the party primary election to replace Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The polls were released a few minutes before the end of voting Wednesday night. For an outright victory, Livni needed 40 percent of the vote. The three TV exit polls gave her between 47 percent and 49 percent. Her nearest rival, former defense minister and military chief Shaul Mofaz, received 37 percent in all three polls.

Bhutto Widower Elected Pakistani President The widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto became Pakistan's new president Saturday after winning a landslide election victory that makes him a critical partner of the West against international terrorism. Unofficial results announced after separate votes in the federal and provincial assemblies showed Asif Ali Zardari winning an overwhelming majority.
