US Youth More Confident in Social Security — Are You?

Thirty-six percent of young American voters are at least somewhat confident in the US Social Security system, according to a new poll. While almost two-thirds of voters 29-years-old and younger do not have much hope for the taxpayer funded retirement system, the newest numbers show a rise in confidence. Less than a month ago, only 19 percent of voters in the same demographic were at least somewhat confident. Right now, employees pay a 6.2 percent tax on their earnings of up to $102,000, while employers pay an additional 6.2 percent. Barack Obama wants to extend the tax to earnings above $250,000, still leaving earnings from $102,000 - $250,000 untaxed. Perhaps his plan to increase the Social Security tax on higher income has some voters more confident in the system's survival. Does America Need More Political Parties?

When Gallup asked the public in 2003 whether America needed a third party, a majority opposed the idea. But asked again in 2007, the majority of both Democrats and Republicans, seemingly unsatisfied with the two-party system, welcomed more parties. Well again this year, Americans have changed their minds. A majority of Democrats, 56 percent, and Republicans, 55 percent, think the two major parties are doing an adequate job and thus there is no need for another party to compete with them. Even though liberals support third parties the most at 51 percent, fewer liberals support third parties since the survey began five years ago. As for Independents, 63 percent want more parties . . . maybe the rest like being unrepresented?The two-party system can add to adversarial undertones in the US — if you're a Democrat or Republican, every leader is either for or against you. In fact, every affiliated person you meet is either on your team or the enemy. Perhaps multiple parties would simply lead to a more harmonious society. And of course, those with views that do not match those of the major parties would welcome competition, too.Source

Yes! Even if they don't get elected, important policies they advocate can be adopted.

Do America's Best Days Lie Ahead or in the Past?

Forty-four percent of respondents believe America's best days are still to come, according to a poll just released. The pessimists, who think the good days have passed, represent 41 percent of the surveyed group. Optimism about the country's future appears tied to individual economic status — voters who make less than $40,000 a year are more likely to say the best days are behind the US. Those making more think the future will be better than the past and present.The beginning of the 21st century has been tough for America — terrorists brought down the Twin Towers, the US itself launched a war without UN approval, added $42 trillion to the debt, and saw a surplus morph into a deficit of half a trillion dollars. Even though hard times could make you want to kiss the best days goodbye, perhaps this adversity will inspire America to reinvent itself for modern, and better, days. Source

"Race" hasn't been without its partner "card" much this election and the reason the subject has been taboo and arguable could be this: according to a new poll conducted by Stanford University, the percentage of voters who may reject Obama because of his race could easily outnumber the final difference between the candidates during the last election. And the negative responders aren't all McCain Republicans, either. More than a third of white Democrats have negative views towards blacks calling them “lazy," “violent," and responsible for their own problems.

The US government is far deeper in debt than any of the companies it is bailing out. Unsurprisingly, about seven percent of American voters think their government should bail out financial institutions, while 65 percent think the failed companies should file bankruptcy. A new survey from Rasmussen suggests that the majority of Americans approve of the Fed's decision to let Lehman Brothers go bankrupt on Sunday, but disapprove of yesterday's decision to use $85 billion in taxpayer money to save AIG.

One Yale scholar thinks he has a golden idea: a "failure tax." Jonathan G S Koppel wrote in the New York Times that investment banks and similar companies should pay catastrophic risk insurance premiums to the government, that would cover the cost of better regulation and and bail outs, just like other companies pay the government for food or crop insurance.Even though bailouts usually end in increased taxes and increased deficit for taxpayers, do you think it's the way to avoid financial crisis?Source

For now. But, then the US needs new system to prevent taxpayers from footing the bill.

No. Corporate welfare has to stop. We can't reward greed and poor judgment.
