Cuban President Raul Castro is ready to listen to what President-elect Barack Obama has to say about US-Cuban relations. But Castro told Sean Penn, who traveled to Cuba to interview the dictator, that the meeting would have to be on neutral ground. Castro said: Personally, I think it would not be fair that I be the first to visit, because it is always the Latin American presidents who go to the United States first. But it would also be unfair to expect the president of the United States to come to Cuba. We should meet in a neutral place. Perhaps we could meet at Guantanamo.

Apparently Castro would set a location precondition before meeting face-to-face with the US president. As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama indicated that he would take steps to loosen the US-Cuba trade embargo. The majority of you agreed with such a policy. Thanks to relatively cheap prices, wireless Internet on board, and an increase in service-frequency, more Americans are hopping on the bus, rather than traveling by plane or car. Over the past year, intercity bus travel (think Greyhound) has increased by 9.8 percent, a growth rate higher than anything seen in the past 40 years. Considering driving a car rules out multitasking, and flying includes long security lines, taking the bus doesn't seem so bad! It also has its green advantages — CO2 emissions dropped by 36,000 tons, and 3.48 million gallons of fuel were conserved in the past year. Speaking about uncertain economic times at a press conference today, President-elect Barack Obama said one thing's for certain: He has a mandate. Obama explained: We had, I think, a decisive win, because of the extraordinary desire for change on the part of the American people. And so I don't think there is any question that we have a mandate to move the country in a new direction, and not continue the same old practices that have gotten us into the fix that we're in.

Despite his confidence that he has the political capital to change the country's course, Obama also said he realizes a large portion of the country voted for John McCain and that "wisdom is not the monopoly of any one party." And everything — save the part about the troops — looks like a parody that Tina Fey will jump into at any second. Yet it all checks out. It will air on cable station across the US this weekend. A conservative group called Our Country Deserves Better claims to have paid for and created the ad as a counterattack to the media bashing thrown her way. But the conspirator in me says it cannot be real. Or can it?

Though no offer has been made, her vetting could be taking extra time because of Bill Clinton's financial entanglements. After setting fires in 2002 and 2006 that destroyed 160,000 acres of national forest, the homeless man was sentenced to four years in prison and $101 million in fines. While in prison, the arsonist will have to pay $100 each year toward his fine. Once he's out, he must contribute $50 a month for the rest of his life. Right now Steven lives on government disability insurance, but if he gets a job, his payments will be adjusted accordingly. Since the law requires anyone who has damaged property repay the cost of the lost property to the victim, the judge ignored how much Steven could afford. While it's crucial to send a message to arsonists that such destructive and dangerous activity will be punished, do you think the punishment fit the crime in this case?Source

Thirty-six percent of young American voters are at least somewhat confident in the US Social Security system, according to a new poll. While almost two-thirds of voters 29-years-old and younger do not have much hope for the taxpayer funded retirement system, the newest numbers show a rise in confidence. Less than a month ago, only 19 percent of voters in the same demographic were at least somewhat confident. Right now, employees pay a 6.2 percent tax on their earnings of up to $102,000, while employers pay an additional 6.2 percent. Barack Obama wants to extend the tax to earnings above $250,000, still leaving earnings from $102,000 - $250,000 untaxed. Perhaps his plan to increase the Social Security tax on higher income has some voters more confident in the system's survival. In the late '50s the space race with Russia was headline news. In 1969, all eyes were glued on Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as they became the first men on the moon. Half a century later, space travel has lost some of its clout, but not its intrigue.Last week India landed its first probe on the moon and earlier this year China made headlines with its first spacewalk. Every time NASA launches a shuttle it's news — which on occasion has led to horrible tragedies — but today much of what the organization does with government money is satellite research on the Earth's environmental status, work on the International Space Station, and aeronautics research and development. Doubtless, there are still lots of kids who want to grow up to be astronauts, but tell us — do you think space travel is still relevant or a waste of the country's money?

Thirty-two US states criminalize passing on the disease, and in some countries, intentional transmission leads to life in prison.While such a harmful action may seem like it warrants some legal attention, activists worry that these laws could force the epidemic underground or deter people from getting treatment, thus having the unintended consequence of spreading the disease. Last spring, a Texas jury handed down a 35-year prison sentence for the crime of assault with a deadly weapon after an HIV-positive man spit into the eye and mouth of a police officer. Most of you said that the sentence was too extreme, since saliva does not pass on HIV. What do you make of laws that punish people who actually do transmit HIV to another person? Source

Hillary Clinton the position of Secretary of State.While there's been much speculation that Clinton was among Obama's top picks, she reportedly requested time to consider the offer. Clinton spoke at a transit industry conference in New York on Friday and held back from making any indication of her choice, saying "any inquiries should be directed to his transition team." The Secretary of State is the highest-ranking cabinet secretary and head of the Department of State, concerned with foreign affairs.Source

For years, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been the portrait of the American political couple — while of course they've always had their detractors and critics — they've stood as powerhouses both on their own and together. Even before her campaign for president ended, however, to some the election season exposed a less than pleasant underbelly of the Clintons. While Bill and Hill supported Barack Obama, at times it seemed like they were intentionally not putting their hearts in the campaign. For instance when Bill stopped by Letterman he complimented McCain and (as Chris Rock pointed out right after) seemingly avoided saying Obama's name.The rationale behind Clinton's tepid support could have had something to do with wanting Hillary to have another chance in 2012, but that might be painting the couple far more sinister than we should. They came under fire again this week when they had to deny having told senators to support Lieberman. While in the end the Clintons did rally for Obama, the lack of full-hearted support turned some fans sour. Even though 52 percent of California seems to agree with Scott Eckern's stance on gay marriage, the artistic director of the California Musical Theatre stepped down after it was revealed that he donated $1,000 to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign.In a statement, coming after a boycott of the theater was called Tuesday, Eckern said: I am leaving California Musical Theatre after prayerful consideration to protect the organization and to help the healing in the local theatre-going and creative community. I am disappointed that my personal convictions have cost me the opportunity to do what I love the most.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin announced yesterday that Countdown with Keith Olbermann has been renewed for at least the length of Barack Obama's term. He said: "Keith Olbermann is at the core of MSNBC's current success. Countdown is our signature program and I'm thrilled that we're going to be able to bring it to Keith's loyal viewers for another four year term."

The often incensed and always passionate newscaster, who went on The View yesterday and admitted to not voting as a symbolic gesture of objectivity, will be on board for more of his Special Comments (surely to be creatively engineered after Bush leaves). Olbermann will also play a prominent role in MSNBC's coverage of all major news events. Is this announcement music (or noise) to your ears?

Leading up to the US presidential elections, 90 miles off the coast of Florida most people were rooting for Barack Obama. Now that he's won, Cubans hope that the new president will take steps to soften the 46-year-old US-Cuba trade embargo. Way back in August 2007, then long-shot Obama got heat for saying he would meet personally with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Obama also called for unrestricted rights of Cuban Americans to travel and send money to Cuba. Rival Hillary Clinton said that policy should remain the same until a post-Castro government changes course.Since President Bush made the embargo even more strident, Cubans would probably welcome even a modest retreat from the current policy. In an interview with Fox News, he admitted that Palin was difficult behind the scenes, refused to be briefed before interviews, threw temper tantrums, and showed a worrying lack of international knowledge. For example, she didn't know Africa is a continent or which countries are in NAFTA. It's worrying, but less of an issue now that she's no longer a possible VP. Then again, her name is already being tossed around in 2012 talk. So what do you think — do you still care about dirt on Sarah Palin, or are you done spending time on it?

Sarah Palin to Blame If John McCain Loses?

A new poll shows that 59 percent of surveyed voters believe Sarah Palin is not ready for the job of vice president. The rise in Palin doubt surely is weighing on the Republican ticket, as one-third of voters also said the VP pick would be a major factor in their voting decision. Yesterday, ex secretary of state and strong McCain supporter Lawrence Eagleburger offered a gloomy assessment of Palin's ability to step in for McCain saying: "I devoutly hope that (she) would never be tested." Meanwhile, even harsher criticism is coming allegedly from inside the McCain camp. This week reports broke that "top advisers" inside the campaign had said Palin was "going rogue," and described her as a "diva" and a "whack job." But, of course, the McCain/Palin ticket could still end up in the White House. If the reported name calling by top advisors is true, the next four years could prove to be a little awkward. Then again, winning might help rewrite campaign history. Source

Here's the second installment of "the night Barack Obama took over the television." Appearing via satellite on the Daily Show before his 11 p.m. rally with Bill Clinton (so late!) Obama described his big infomercial to Jon Stewart, re-running Michelle's line about his kids being afraid he was taking over all the TV. Stewart asked of the commercial, ". . . Will it. . . annoy us?" Fair question, sir! Poking fun at some of the scare tactics used against Obama, Stewart brought up the specter of the "Bradley Effect" and asked whether Obama might hit the booth on the 4th and his white half might be scared to vote for him. After chatting for a bit, Obama said, "This is the time to want to be president. . . now is the time when you can have some impact." Obama summed up his visit saying that despite being a "pretty conservative nation, " we now have "big challenges and problems that give us a chance to really move in a new direction." It was a better satellite connection than usual — both Obama and Stewart drew audience laughs and cheers — sometimes that satellite delay kills any sort of comedic timing. What did you think? Obama on the Daily Show — Better Than His 30-Minute Ad?

The Daily Show was cute, but I really liked the infomercial — it was the perfect pitch.

The Daily Show all the way. He was relaxed and compelling, the big ad was too much.

Neither! Big deal, he bought an infomercial and was on late night TV. Not interesting.

Both. Each appearance succeeded in its own way and I liked the whole night.
