It's starting to get really cold now, so thank goodness for the DVD release of
Mamma Mia! this week. One of the massive box office hits of the summer, the film based on the stage musical will bring some welcome sunshine and laughter into your living room.
Meryl Streep is on wonderful all-singing all-dancing form as Donna, a single mum with a run-down hotel on an idyllic Greek island.

Meryl Streep is one seriously versatile actress, and her latest role in
Doubt is a far cry from her rendition of the all-singing all-dancing single mum in Mamma Mia.
Set in 1964 in the Bronx, the film is based on John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Meryl plays Sister Aloysius, the Principal of a Catholic school who believes in the power of fear and discipline.

I love this news:
Steve Martin is joining the cast of the untitled Nancy Meyers movie that will star Meryl Streep (I've already expressed how much
I'm looking forward to this project). What's more, his character will duke it out (maybe not physically, though I would love to see that) with Alec Baldwin's character to win the affections of the main lady (Streep).
I'm not always a fan of Meyers's work (What Women Want, oy) but she reliably attracts some top-notch talent.

Um, we're not in
Mamma Mia! anymore. The trailer for the Pulitzer Prize-winning-play-turned-movie,
Doubt, has hit the Web and it's dark — and bubbling with Oscar potential. The adaptation was written and directed by Doubt's playwright, John Patrick Shanley.

When writer/director Nancy Meyers is good, she is so good. We can thank her for bringing us Baby Boom and Father of the Bride, two of my favorite lighthearted late-'80s/early-'90s comedies. Then again, she's also responsible for What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, and The Holiday.

Many thought that breaking
Spider-Man 3's record for the biggest opening weekend ever
would be difficult, even for
The Dark Knight. But the much-hyped and
critically adored sequel to Batman Begins shattered many records over the weekend — including Spidey's.
Earning an estimated $155.4 million, Bruce Wayne and gang smashed
box office records for the biggest single-day gross in history and the biggest opening weekend for an IMAX release.

If there were a family get-together with all the slick, recent Broadway-to-film productions, like
Hairspray and
Dreamgirls,
Mamma Mia! would be the drunk older aunt whose clothing doesn't really match and who says all the wrong things but you love her and her kooky, off-kilter self anyway. The movie is, like that aunt, all over the place: Only a third of the cast can actually sing, the plot is thin, and the characters are — with the exception of a few moments — as one-dimensional as it gets. Oh, and there are hardly three minutes between one ABBA cover and the next.

Friends, the time is here. That spectacle of a musical,
Mamma Mia!, is going to hit theaters in a matter of days. While many will rush to see
The Dark Knight, some will be lured to this shining, glorious ABBA extravaganza starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried and Colin Firth.

With well-known ABBA songs, an idyllic Greek location and more stars than you can shake a stick at,
Mamma Mia! is bound to be the feel-good hit film of the summer.
Based on the hugely successful stage production, this musical movie stars Meryl Streep as ex-pat Donna, a single mum with a run-down hotel on a beautiful Greek island. Her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is marrying Sky (the gorgeous, and often topless, Dominic Cooper) and the bride-to-be wants her father at the wedding.
