Front Page: US Cracks Largest ID Theft, Rwanda Accuses French of Genocide, Bush to Urge Human Rights

Hacking into the computer systems of major retailers like TJ Maxx and Barnes & Noble, the group is accused of stealing 40 million credit card numbers before selling them. The DOJ says the scam caused "widespread" losses, and US AG Mukasey says, "this case highlights our increasing vulnerability to the theft of personal information."

Front Page: Bush Arrives in Seoul, Storm Hits Coast, Food Shortages for Nepal
  • Bush Arrives in Seoul: President Bush arrived in Seoul, Korea today for talks aimed at communist North Korea — and instead of the large anti-US rally that was expected, a huge crowd of support gathered in the city center. Amid a background of gospel music, the pro-US rally attracted about 15,000 people for what is thought to be Bush's last trip to the country as president. One of those gathered said, "I came to pray for the country to come together and with President Bush coming, for his visit to go smoothly." There was little sign of the tension that sparked huge anti-government protests over the ending of the ban of US beef imports.

Vitamin C and Residents' Rights Are Big Losers in Olympics The Olympics (starting on Friday!) has caused all kinds of disruptions in China as they scurry to clean up their air — and their sartorial statements. The factories that produce 80 percent of the world's ascorbic acid, aka Vitamin C, crucial to cold curing and a huge part of modern food production, have been closed down. The reach of the Games preparation seems to have no bounds. And it's not just fashion statements getting makeovers — Beijing residents are beginning to grumble about the disruptions the Games have brought to their lives.

Front Page: Combat Tours Reduced, Olmert to Quit, Fewer Illegal Immigrants, Karadzic Due in Court
  • Combat Tours Reduced: President Bush said in an appearance at the White House this morning that combat tours in Iraq will be reduced to 12 months from 15. He said, "we are now in our third consecutive month with reduced violence levels holding steady." With a deal on security close, it "relieves the burden on our forces." Five US soldiers died in Iraq this month compared to 66 in July 2007.
  • Olmert to Quit: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced he will resign in September after his party chooses a new leader. Olmert is tangled in a corruption investigation, and the announcement heightens uncertainty in both the Middle East peace effort and the political legacies of both Olmert and Bush, who'd hoped for breakthroughs before leaving office.

  • Fewer Illegal Immigrants: The number of immigrants in the US illegally has fallen by 1.3 million in the past year, an 11 percent fall since the peak last August.

The drop is attributed to a "housing first" strategy. The plan emphasizes placing the chronically homeless in permanent shelters to stop the cycle of emergency shelters, hospitals, and the streets.

Teaser Trailer For Oliver Stone's W Teaser Trailer For Oliver Stone's W From the minute-and-a-half-long teaser trailer for Oliver Stone's movie about George W. Bush, W, it looks like the degree to which you will like or be intrigued by this movie depends on how curious you are about Dubya (played here by Josh Brolin) and his past. Not that it's a totally accurate portrayal, but it does appear to be a relatively straight, dramatic telling of his life, focusing in particular on his relationship with his father, George H.
