On a show like the View I don't expect them to have much professionalism since the main focus is discussion of news events.

Well why should the government be involved with that? If we really want to be fair, the government should only recognize civil unions (gay or straight couples) and then marriages only take place in churches. But unfortunately this will never happen.

Eh if The View's main focus is discussion of news events..shouldn't they be MORE professional than a talk show host who talks about everything? But agreed the View is like that druken family at Thansgiving Dinner that's screaming at each other....I just don't like Hasselback and find that she doesn't really think for herself...and doesn't come off as intelligent about anything really....

Ellen is the epitome of class. People are willing to listen to her more than others because she doesn't harp on it. She very rarely even talks about being gay. She's gay, but it doesn't completely define her. I respect her so much.

HF yet is sad that other people, not saying you, but other people will like and respect her because she is funny and polite and may even think her and Portia cute, but will still support a constutional amendment banning gay marriage. Its like what more do you need? If exposure to uncorrupt gay people just living their lives being normal isn't enough for you, what do say to that? Instead people will group her into some sort exception category, and continue on with their prejudices .

I'll never understand why people are so concerned about keeping gays from getting married. To the extent that they would add it to the very constitution that this republic is based on!

Oh I completely agree with you Jessie. Trust me I'm all for gay marriage. I still think Ellen is great and opens up minds that might not open up otherwise. Even thinking she is an exception to the rule is a step in the right direction towards tolerance and then towards acceptance.

Marriage is a financial contract, Organic? Maybe it is for some people (which is sad), but my marriage is certainly much more than that. It's a sacred union between my husband and I. Holy matrimony between a man and a woman, just as it should be.

prncss-great! YOu have a great relationship. The government, though, doesn't care if you're still making eyes at each other or if you only speak once a month. As far as a legal standpoint, marriage is a contract.

This is exactly my thinking--okay, social attitudes take a while to change, and I need to accept that, and not push my "progressive" views down peoples' throats. But do we really want evidence of our bigotry in our federal Constitution!?

Ellen is so positive! And I remember when I first found out she was gay, it was such a scandal, I was so offended and my family wouldn't allow her show in our house. But she's almost like a barometer of public perception of homosexuality. I think ten years later, society as a whole is more accepting, at least I hope so. And I am so happy she is doing so well. But maybe I just grew up in the last ten years.

I realize that my opinion is different than others posting here, but I would hope that you can be respectful and not insult me. If you want to question my views and know why I feel the way I do then go right ahead. I will give you an honest answer, whether I think the majority will like it or not. So yes, I do have a great marriage, and I consider myself to be very blessed. I was lucky to find a man who is intelligent and kind and funny and shares the same values that I do. And I do believe that marriage should only be allowed between a man and a woman. If gays are allowed to marry then what group will start demanding their rights next? Polygamists?

I love Ellen. And I love that she can bring people like McCain onto her show and STILL keep her cool.

Also, I'm just of the mind that the government should butt out of any marriage, heterosexual or homosexual, so I'm not trying to unsult anyone's views. Hey, I'm Catholic, and so is my bf, and we want to get married too, in a church with a priest and all that, but I don't see how giving gay people the right to marry infringes on what we get to do as man and woman. What I do in my relationship is no one else's business.

I really admire Ellen, she is very classy and professional. I agree hausfrau, I wish Rosie would take a lesson from her (even though I know you weren't talking about her time on The View). You can be passionate about issues that matter to you without being obnoxious.

The Rush Limbaugh example got me thinking. Even murderers who kill their first wives have the right to remarry in this country. Rapists can marry, we don't deny the right to any other pair of consenting adults, unless they are brother and sister or mother and father (I believe in some states first cousins can marry). It boggles my mind that someone who kills his first wife, could remarry and enter into that "holy union," but two gay people could not.

Or people who have been married three or four times can remarry. Liz Taylor got married like what 7 times? Divorce rates are almost up the fifty percent. Adulators can stay married even though they don't hold the vows sacred. People can get married for convenience, to become a citizen or for money, but a homosexual couple can't marry for love. It makes no sense.

Thanks em, for your respectful and pleasant response. I think it's very important for people to always show respect for one another, even when their views are different. And I haven't felt insulted on this thread, which is unusual. Normally when I post my opinion I end up feeling like Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the view . And I want to say that even though I can't honestly say that I hope you'll be able to marry, I can honestly tell you that I hope that you and your partner enjoy a long and happy life together. I think every human being deserves that.
