What Makes you Yawn?

Have you ever been in a deep conversation with someone whose company you were truly enjoying and all of a sudden you start yawning? Well, I know I have, and while I always thought it was incredibly rude, what I want to know is, do you think yawning is done out of boredom?

Ive also heard somewhere that some people yawn as they relax. Like if your really nervous or stressed and you start relaxing then you start yawing. not sure if thats true though, its just what I heard.

I was going to say waht Muirnea said. I know that I yawn when I'm relaxed. Sometimes that's when someone is talking, and it always makes me feel bad that most people take it negatively.

That happens to me sometimes.. and it's not because I'm bored of the conversation! Usually I'm just tired or relaxed. Don't stress it! There are other body language cues that scream "bored!" and yawning isn't necessarily one.

i think you start to yawn when you start feeling kinda "comfy" and doesn't yawning actually help you wake up?

Yawning occurs when you're brain is low on oxygen ... which often comes from non-activity. I yawn more during the afternoon hours then any other time, lol.

my question is, why does is yawning contagious?! not just with people around me, but even with my dog! if he yawns, i feel the need to yawn too! i've also caught him yawn after i yawned. i think it is a very weird phenomenon.

This is good to know. That way the next time I yawn at a meeting I can tell me boss that my brain is so simulated that I have to yawn to cool it down! Eye-wink

Yawning is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. I think that when you are tired or inactive, you are not breathing at the rate you would be if you were excited or pumped up.
