Bush Signs Order to Give Up White House Keys Nov. 4

I don't think he'll have to make a reservation at the Pennsylvania Avenue Motel 6, but with one flourish of his quill this morning, George W. Bush signed the executive order to turn the keys to the White House over to whoever wins the election, on Nov. 4.

Though there's always talk of lame duck-edness, not much light is shed on the fact that the government can't wait until inauguration for the new team to start. With the order today, Bush established a transition council, a move that spokeswoman Perino says, "is especially important as our nation is fighting a war, dealing with a financial crisis, and working to protect ourselves from future terrorist attacks." Congress threw $8 million toward the project.

The candidates are both gearing up to take over the lease, too, as it were. Both campaigns' transition teams are getting full background checks for the first time as well as security clearances so that they, Perino says, “make sure we give the new team everything they need so they can continue to protect the country and address our economic challenges.”

To see how this move compares historically, read more.

Bill Clinton had a similar transition team, an effort started in modern history by Jimmy Carter. Carter wrote the book on transitioning, starting before the primary season was over — he started in early June! He wanted a Cabinet-run government and meeting early allowed them to develop extensive lists of appointments, lists, and agendas but also internal conflicts which hampered his administration from the get-go.

Does the current climate require hitting the ground running more so than it has in the past? Do you get the feeling Bush has checked out even earlier than this order might indicate?

I think he'll have to hide his "Presidency for Dummies" book, too.

I know the team is really for policy and important stuff, but I do wonder if there's some kind of move-in/move-out checklist like you get at an apartment.

The last episode of West Wing makes it look crazy. Basically, the first family leaves all of their stuff in the White House as is until they leave for the inauguration, at which point a staff of dozens comes in and basically packs them up and moves them out in a matter of hours. Man do I wish I'd had that the last dozen times I moved!

When you're in a long relationship with no real eye towards marriage or children, you look for other milestones, and our first cross-country move together convinced me I had made the right choice in life partner. We both kept saying, "Shouldn't we be more stressed out by now? This is all much easier than it should be..." I think it was the only time I ever moved without having at least one little mini-breakdown where I just cry and consider throwing everything I own away. I swear knowing we can peacefully move (and maybe even have fun while doing it) means as much to me as a wedding ring.

But I think if hell exists, if you go there you have to move every weekend, by yourself, in a compact car, in the winter.

At least Bush doesn't have roommates that decide not to help out when they've finished moving their own personal belongings (i.e. bedroom) and refuse to move anything else (i.e. kitchen and living room).

    I hate roommates.

Counting down the days...hours...minutes...and seconds until this idiot it out of office. I was right 8 years ago when I said this guy would be bad for our country. In this instance, I hate being right!

Am I the only one who read this and wondered why it takes 8 millions bucks to make a new set of keys, clean, and perform some background checks?

Good riddance. I can't believe eight years have gone by, though. It is crazy how fast time slips away.

I guess the transition teams have a lot they have to do. They have to work with each agency within the white house that is moving out to obtain all pertinent information, protocol, equipment, top priority initiatives that were still running, etc. While then going through the process of vetting and naming people to take over the agencies. It needs to seem like a seemless transition.

"Our enemies understand how potentially vulnerable we are in the transition from one administration to the next," Clay Johnson III, former Executive Director of the Bush-Cheney Presidential Transition, said recently at a forum on transition planning. "This is something we need to be very, very seriously prepared for."

Obama released information regarding the requirements for his team

I don't think McCain has yet. But he should

    President Bush,
As you leave, please make sure you leave everything that was here before you came into office. That includes the china and the silver. Oh wait, Hillary has the silver, so nevermind.

    Woohoo

Finally, the time has come for him to get his a** out of there. These 8yrs have been the longest and worst. Our country needs a change, instead of 4yrs of rotten (or possibly worse) policies that put our country in this mess.. No way, No how, No McCain.

It's important to make sure your disdain for others is stated broadly and generally so it's not seen as a personal attack.

How about not having disdain for others just because they think differently?
