The Vice Presidential Debate on SNL: Home Run or Ho-hum?

The costumes were spot-on down to the fetching French braid, and Queen Latifah stepped in quite convincingly as moderator Gwen Ifill — all the details of the Saturday Night Live skewering of the Vice-Presidential Debate were picture perfect. (Even down to Joe Biden calling himself "Joe Biden." Did you catch that on Thursday?)

The zinger-iest question re-do? The discussion of gay marriage, from Biden's "visiting them in the hospital is just as good," to Palin's it should be an institution "between two unwilling teenagers." And then there was the talent portion. Oh, yes, it was there — I kind of wish the real debate had had one too! Check out the sketch — are you laughing at the fake version?

I though it was great. The guy who played Biden did a good job, I laughed at him more that Tina. And the unwilling teenagers line was genius.

It was great--and they really made fun of them both rather than just picking on one. Tina Fey nailed it once again!

It wasn't as funny as the other Palin skits, but it was still pretty good. "Biden" was funny, too--w/ his love of John McCain.

"We're gonna take every aspect of the crisis and look at it and we're gonna ask ourselves, What would a maverick do in this situation?; and then ya know we'll do that."

    I loved that line.

I'm just about to watch it on my Tivo.

What I REALLY wish they would do is a meeting between Sarah Palin and Bill Clinton. Now THAT would be funny.

The skit they had last time on weekend update with Darrell Hammond as Bill was HILARIOUS.

This was my second favorite SNL skit of Palin. Biden was HILARIOUS. I loved it. I laughed so hard...as hard as the debate itself. Eye-wink

SNL's problem, and it has been for years, is even when a skit is funny, they drag it out too long. They always go a minute or two past where they should end. Sometimes it just gets sad.

Tina Fey is a genius! Queen Latifah expressions were amazing too. Hilarious, its to the point that while watching the real debate I was trying to guess how it was going to be parodied. (although watching Palin speak in real life is almost a parody itself) *wink!

I thought it was funny--loved Biden talking about Scranton (well this was especially funny to me, since one of my friends got transferred to Scranton and has not stopped complaining about it), and the part about marriage being between two "unwilling teenagers" and the "Can I call you Joe? Because I have some zingers that revolve around my use of the name Joe". The Joe Six-Pack moment was good too, even though I still cannot wrap my head around that term being endearing in any way, shape, or form.

QL also made an awesome moderator. Eye-wink

I'm so happy SNL stated the obvious. Palin did horribly. Its not a matter of opinion or political allegiance, it is a matter of content. She didn't answer the questions and she didn't know what she was talking about. The only reason people are saying the debate was a tie is because she didn't do as bad as expected. Which means she managed to keep talking coherently the entire time.

Expectations that low are not acceptable from a Vice Presidential candidate and if I were Republican I would be pissed off and writing some very angry letters to McCain right now.

Jessie, I totally agree with you. Everyone says to cut her some slack, but she's gotten more slack than most of us get at our jobs, and most of us aren't running for national office. If we can't have high expectations of the people who could potentially run our country, then who can we have high expectations of? Whoever wins this has a huge responsibility ahead, and I don't think that we should lose sight of that.

Tina Fey is a genius, but it was great that they made fun of Biden too. I don't want to go to Scranton ever. Queen Latifah was great. This is the first time I am watching the show in a long while, and the rest of it isn't all that funny, but Anne Hathaway did a pretty good job.

Nope, I mean it's the majority national opinion, based on the major recognized polls conducted after the debate, that Biden won:

McLatchy – Biden wins by 52%

A CBS News/Knowledge Networks Poll found that 46 per cent of uncommitted voters who watched the debate thought Biden won, with 21 per cent siding with Palin.

A CNN poll found respondents judging Biden the winner by a margin of 51 per cent to 36 per cent but calling Palin more likable by 54 per cent to Biden's 36 per cent.

Joe Biden by a whopping 61-39 in a Fox online news poll.

Zogby survey of likely voters was taken after the Biden-Palin debate ended, and showed Biden won by a clear margin, 50 percent to 41 percent.

Rassmussen: forty-five percent (45%) of voters thought Biden won the debate while 37% thought Palin emerged victorious

MSNBC: Who won the VP debate?
    Joe Biden 50%
    Sarah Palin 40%
    Tie 4.8%

My favorite part was when Joe Biden cried for 3.5 seconds.

Just long enough to let me know he's not afraid of his feelings, but not long enough for me to think he's a sissy.

Well played, sir. I don't think anyone noticed how arbitrary it was.

This is the second thread in recent memory where someone has said that this isn't a matter of opinion, or some similar remark. I thought the whole point of this site was sharing our opinions, no matter where they fell? Agreeing to disagree? In this country, there is certainly more than 1 opinion! That is, after all, why we vote...

Yes this trend towards wanting to ensure the leaders of our country are no more informed, articulate and educated than we are - where did that come from, anyway?

Its like some bizarre, mass intellectual insecurity has stricken vast swathes of the US population, right along with "fear as a motivational factor in your voting".

Fear and insecurity are TERRIBLE reasons to vote for anyone because its like shopping while you are hungry - your decisions will not necessarily be the best ones, only the ones that satisfy the immediate emotional need.

A leader should be just that - a leader.

Palin, had she the real responsibility and character required, would have TURNED IT DOWN. That she did not, tells me all I need to know about this person.

"The gal next door", winky-winky, nudge-of-elbow bullcrap is not good enough, its not good enough for the USA and its certainly not good enough for the world.

I actually thought Anne Hathaway was pretty good. SNL...its been kind of boring for a while now...but Tina Fey is awesome.

I love the Biden impersonation... and about his love for McCain. And I also love how SNL just lays it out in the begining about how everyone will consider it a tie if Palin doesn't droll and can make it on stage and form coherent sentences. But to give Palin credit I do think she has her charms, and I can see why some Republicans support her. She has a personality that attracts you in..IF you were already republicans. If she had more experience to back it all up than she'd be a knock out. Unfortunately she answers questions with points that are completely irrelevant and behaves in a total unprofessional manner. (can you imagine a women CEO winking and giving a shout out to a school in a press conference discussing why she has taken over control over say IBM? Or Apple?).

Oh and Someone posted this a few days ago..thought it was worthy of repeating:

    CNN blogs:

"While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Palin and her bid.

The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a 'Post Turtle'".
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.

The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road you
come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle".

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he
continued to explain. "You know she didn't get up there by herself,
she doesn't belong up there, and she doesn't know what to do while
she's up there, and you just wonder what kind of idiot put her up
    there to begin with".

I think SNL's last two skits were a WHOLE lot funnier than this one. It was definitely just a "Ho-hum" for me. Tina Fey does do a great job as Palin, but Biden's wasn't believable to me.

I wasn't saying that who you vote for isn't a matter of opinion. I'm saying her performance had to little to do with McCain's positions. She performed poorly and I would say that if Biden performed poorly. I personally am not as bothered by it because I'm voting Dem this election (though obviously if the Rep win this election I will be very concerned about Palin), but if I were Republican I would be very upset by who McCain selected. I think you can say someone did badly without conceding to the other side. You want to go with the party who best supports your opinions, but you also want to go with the candidates who are best for the job.
