SNL Spoofs the Palin/Couric Interview: Lay Off or Loving It?

SNL was almost wall-to-wall politics last night, with an ersatz debate match-up, a faux Bill Clinton making an appearance on "Weekend Update," and this spoof on the Palin/Couric interview from earlier this week. Compare it to the original and see what you think — did they nail it? Or do you wish there was a joke where the punchline wasn't "Sarah Palin?"

It was funny! And did everyone miss when they made fun of Obama and McCain as well? It wasn't just Palin that was the punch line of jokes last night. It's SNL, no one should be taking it too seriously.

Honestly making fun of Palin will never get old. I love the part about when Fey said she didn't like the U.N because of all the foreigners and that they plan to send all of those jobs to America. That was too funny.

i think its hysterical! amy poehler has mastered the blank stare and did you notice tina fey's legs? whoa! i wish my stems looked as good!

liv - i'm glad you mentioned that because i was going to ask if they made fun of obama, i don't watch SNL so i don't know but the last time i saw a skit like that was months ago so i didn't know if they had ditched that or not.

I don't even get why this is a poll question...SNL makes fun of politicians, it's an election year, Sarah Palin is apparently a politician and one who is very easy to poke fun at.

I mean, they also had a skit making fun of Obama and McCain. And Amy Poehler as poking fun at Katie Couric. Is the question here: should SNL be able to make fun of politicians?

Or does this just go to the whole "stop picking on Sarah Palin because she is a pretty woman" line? Why should she get an exception and the other politicians don't? I think this question shows a bit of bias... Eye-wink

This is what SNL has always done to politicians. Besides, didn't Palin herself call the first one "hilarious"?

    That was hilarious.
Please, SNL spoofs everyone. In the last one Clinton was spoofed just like Palin was.

I have to say Tina Fey is my new girl crush! lol

I think we are going to see Palin spoofs for several years, regardless of who wins, but especially when if McCain is elected. It helps that Fey looks a lot like Palin, and I must admit I've never been a fan of SNL, even during the Clinton years.

It's astonishing that one of the funniest parts of the bit was during a piece of the Fey skit that nearly matched Palin's exact word's in the real Couric interview.

It just never stops being funny. I've started yelling "Alaska" as an expletive instead of darn or worse.

She's new so she's an easy target. I think Tina Fey is pretty good, but I don't think these skits are all that funny. Kind of predictable.

I'm all for making fun of elected officials if it's across the board. This election cycle, more than most, the collective sense of humor seems to be in hibernation.

    The spoof debate was great.
"McCain" suggested replacing the three scheduled debates with pie-eating contests.
They had Obama explaining that his tax cut would also apply to "...most members of the Chicago City Council, as well as city building inspectors...because my plan would not tax bribes, kickbacks, shakedowns, embezzlement of government funds, or extortion."

Fey is funny! But I thought Poehler just killed it, in all honesty. She was a mess and totally off with the timing. They need to throw Fey in with another character (aside from one played by Poehler) and I'm sure it will seem fresh again. Because this was kind of dead.

Popcorn, just fyi, Tina Fey is no longer on the cast. She just came back to play Palin, but she stepped down as headwriter for SNL to do 30 Rock, so they won't be having her do any other characters.

PS, love your icon! I am a huge Ar Dev fan.

SNL will stop making political sketches when politicians quit being hilariously mockable.

This skit was hilarious! But, you should have seen the real interview. Amy Poehler nailed Katie Couric's rather dry, condescending manner. It was like there were two different interviews going, Ms. Couric's and Gov. Palin's.

Yeah, I agree with glofriend, the reason that Poehler seemed awful is because she was just imitating Couric, who was pretty...eh...

Tho, if I were Couric in the real interview I probably would have lost it, immediately!

When I saw it I couldn't stop laughing! I hadn't seen the real one yet and kept thinking, "Wow they really stretched this, they are making her look like a moron!"

Yeah well I just saw the real one. SNL was extremely kind. I have no doubt that she is a smart woman, but she has ZERO knowledge of foreign policy. I honestly think I may have more with a BA in International Affairs. But then again, according to her logic, maybe I am an expert on foreign policy since I do live in CA right next to Mexico. I mean I've even negotiated with the Mexican government. I've made hotel reservations, oooh and I even talked a cop out of arresting me on spring break a few years ago. So yep, I'm right there with ya Ms. Palin we are both foreign policy experts.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that SNL probably won't stoop so low to make a joke about 2 dead soldiers and their bracelets. But I think any candidate is fair game to be made fun of.

I read the family asked him not to wear the bracelet and not to use their son as a campaign tool. Guess he overlooked their wants.

You missed the part GS where the mother was "ectastic" about that moment in the debate. Here's the mom's AP response after the right wingers pulled up an article from May this year from the father and tried to smear Obama.

    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hdsm_ntfH32sDoi1u_H9HYCDeaHAD93G1RBG0

I personally thought the moment in the debate was the best. And Obama's line about how no son or daughter dies in vain when under the orders of the Commander in Chief was great. It was very touching and so true.

I don't think it would be stooping very low. The joke isn't about dead soldiers. The joke is how silly it sounded when Obama said "Well I have a bracelet too!" McCain's bracelet story was pretty silly, but Obama just had to get his bracelet story in too! It was such a ridiculous exchange.

I didn't think it was silly. I thought it was the best jab he gave McCain all night. McCain had been using the stump story all year. If you read the article I posted above, Obama hadn't. And the line right after was truly touching, because no soldier dies in vain in war that we send them out to do.

No...but the mother did give him the bracelet....so I think it counts for something. And she said she does'nt understand why these conservative bloggers are attacking him when she was proud that he mentioned her son and her own story. Like I said, they are using a story that was used in May of this year. Nothing recent, until today when the mother defended Obama and the use of her sons name and bracelet.

Besides, why should McCain get in his little anecdote and Obama not? McCain had political reasons for sharing that story. He told it because he wanted to look like the candidate who the parents of military personal look to to keep their children safe. Meanwhile, parents are asking Obama to do that, too. No way should Mac have owned that if BO has been getting bracelets, too. But that's just my opinion.

I guess whether it was touching or silly just depends on your perspective.

However, I take great issue with the idea that "no soldier dies in vain in war that we send them out to do." That's ridiculous. If the soldiers don't accomplish what they intended to accomplish, then the death was in vain. Even if they do accomplish it, and the task was meaningless, then the death was in vain.

I disagree Michelin, but we I don't really want to argue in circles over this so I'll spare you. If that's your feelings, then so be it. I don't share the same sentiment, and I'm sure a few vets including my father who fought two tours in Vietnam don't feel the same.

Do you know what the phrase 'in vain' means? It means it was pointless, useless, futile.

I'm not saying it isn't an honorable sacrifice, I'm saying that if you don't accomplish the goal, the deaths needn't have happened at all. Therefore, they were "in vain".
