Senate Superlatives: Do You Know Who Made Which Lists?

Just like in your high school yearbook, the Senate gets ranked on a few lists — not most popular or best smile (though that gives me an idea. . . ) useful rankings like 50 most conservative/liberal, 50 longest serving, and most recently out, the list of 50 richest. Do you know who made which lists? Click and see if you're the "Most Likely to Succeed" in this quiz! (Hint: If the Senator made the top 50 in any of the lists, it counts.)

Question 1

1 of 10
Which lists did Sen. Robert Byrd make?

"Only" the 13th richest, eh? Does that include his wife's money?

I would assume, just based on the fact that Sen. Kerry is #1 and I would imagine that is based on his wife's money mostly.

    Who's rankings are these?
I got McCain wrong and Elizabeth Dole is starting to morph into Bob!

So, I just looked at the original article (on rollcall.com) and it says McCain is worth $19.64 million, but Cindy has been estimated to be worth over $100 million on her own, which would put them up by the Rockefellers.

I don't know why they're running away from that. Didn't Cindy's father build the company from the ground up? They're the American dream!

This is a little misleading because John McCain wasn't ranked at all on the conservative/liberal scale. He is obviously one of the 50 most conservative senators!

Oh, I definitely don't think he's the "typical" conservative, but I doubt there are any Democrats who are more conservative than him and neither are Lieberman and Sanders, so I would say he's in the top 50.

50 most conservative and liberal would be...well wouldn't it basically be almost a party list? I've only seen top ten liberals or conservative lists.

I wouldn't say he threw his values out the window (well, I wouldn't say it in public) but he does seem to have shifted his view on a lot of issues.

These lists are interesting, but I wonder about how they computed some of them. The link only lists longest serving Senators up to #14. The first list is combined House and Senate time. And some of the people on the Senate list are not current Senators.

Maybe I am just in a complaining/overly analytical mood today.

Yeah this seems like something I would take with a grain of salt, even if you look at the Top 50 richest its just based on what each legislator discloses which may or may not include marital assets.
Interesting point about McCain and is he a 'typical' conservative or not. I would say that being considered a typical conservative nowadays is pretty different than 10 or 20 years ago.

I don't know why it doesn't say where these lists come from, but I assume the richest list is the one on rollcall.com, and the first sentence of the article is "Everything that you are about to read might be wrong."

I guess assets worth over $1 million are listed just as that. So, a house worth less than a million would be listed as, like, "House-$890,000" but a multi-million dollar home would be listed as "House - over $1 million" whether it's worth $1.5 million or $15 million. I think. It's confusing.

Well, dream didn't just pull that question out of thin air. If no one had said or implied that it was, there would have been no need for the question.

I think they both 'liberal' and 'conservative' can have negative connotations depending on who you ask. I personally wouldn't like either words applied to me.

I don't think anyone has said or implied that people aren't allowed to ask questions any more.

By the way, what you're doing here is entirely obvious.

Yeah, True Song! It brought back some pretty awful memories of test taking for me too.

It made me feel more stupider....

I figured after the first half that I was doing good, since I picked the combo answers on pretty much all of them. And then I bombed from there.

And I really dislike the "all of the above, none of the above, some of the above" answers on multiple choice tests. It always made me feel like the professors were deliberately trying to confuse me and make me get the question wrong.

I had a teacher who always did "pick the one out of order" and I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

I had a chemistry teacher that frequently put "don't know don't care" on his multiple choice tests.

Actually I was asking. Seem that all I hear lately is "liberal media" or "liberal" this and that used in a negative (almost scare tactic way). So I was just wondering when did the word "liberal" become a bad term?

Well, I think it would be bad if they were called the "conservative media" too, because the media is supposed to be more or less neutral. That said, I think a conservative might use it in a negative way because it goes against their beliefs. But I've heard conservative used in a negative manner for a long time.

It's funny -- but I never hear conservative used in a negative way. I was with a buddy of mine from work and he was asking me which way do I "go" -- I of course said "as left as they come liberal" -- all I heard after that was a groan and a "oh" -- seems like there a more negative connotations on "liberal" than on conservative.

I guess we might be from different places, but I always hear 'conservative' used to mean uptight, or close-minded. If your friend groaned when you said you were liberal, it was probably because he doesn't like liberal ideas, and not because the word has negative connotations in general.
