Where I'm Clicking Now: Find Your Last Name in the World!

Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? If you search for her using the World Names Profiler map, apparently "Sandiego" is mostly found in France. I saved this little gem for the weekend because you'll want lots of time to play with it. Just plug in your last name and see where most of your kinfolk live, instantly.

This map is for "Smith," which isn't as worldwide as the Witness Protection Program might like you to think. . . I've heard, anyway. Now go search for your own name, it's fun and easy! Where is your family tree planted?

This didn't make any sense for me. I have a Chinese last name, but nothing in Asia was even lit up. Australia, Canada, Europe, and South Africa.

Yeah, Jude, this site is busted. I couldn't get China or Iran to light up, even when I googled "most common last names in China" and entered several, same for Iran. Perhaps because they don't use our alphabet? Either way...kind of a bust.

And dream, I'm on a mac and it's working just fine...?

Muy interesante the highest concentration for me is Australia and U.K. and then of course moderate level of the same here in the U.S. My mothers maiden name shows a strong contrast with a deep concentration in Argentina and a light concentration in the U.S. and Europe.

I didn't get anything for my surname so I tried my mother's maiden name and I got NEW ZEALAND 4.29
    CANADA 2.06
    UNITED STATES 1.78
    SWEDEN 1.26
    ARGENTINA 1.17

Interesting since I only have relatives in US and Canada!

That was interesting. Both my maiden and married last names came up with the expected Spain, the US and Argentina (although I wonder why no other Latin American country showed up). The surprise countries were Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, and Australia for my Spanish surnames.

Mine was as expected, but they can't find my (very Finnish and very Finnish-named) boyfriend anywhere. We tried his mom's maiden name and we got Sweden and Austria, though her name is also definitely Finnish!

My Russian friend showed up in America and not Russia at all....in fact it had zero Russians. Uh..kay.

Think they need to flesh it out a bit more Sticking out tongue

I doubt you get any data from Africa unless your family came from there in the last 50 years and you can easily trace your roots. If your family was the descendants of slaves then that will be a little bit harder if you can't find data of sales and tracing backwards. Most slaves took their owners name or the names given to them.

most of the people with my last name were found in the U.S. i was hoping it'd be a different country.

sucks how it couldn't find my mom's last name.

i wish finding out about your ancestry wasn't so expensive.

I think they only have data for the countries that are in gray when you first look at the map; that could explain why some people are having difficulty. It was completely accurate for my last name:

    Hungary: 10,767.83
    Austria: 181.35
    Canada: 132.49
    Australia: 112.10
    Sweden: 59.41
    Swizterland: 42.17
    Germany: 36.23
    U.S.: 28.17
    Slovenia: 23.20
    Belgium: 15.48

I always knew my last name was very Hungarian!

Not surprising. My father's ancestors were early English colonists and for some reason the spelling changed very slightly. Swap a vowel and it's way more common in Australia.

    Mother's maiden name:

    IRELAND 2267.25
    AUSTRALIA 436.35
    NEW ZEALAND 345.48
    UNITED KINGDOM 277.53
    CANADA 147.39

    Verrrrry Irish.

my maiden name is prominently found in England, big surprise since the name originates from there and is also a town in both England as well as Germany
my married name is prominently found in southern Germany. hooray stuttgart!

    Very cool find!

My maiden name is found mostly in the UK and New Zealand and my married name in the UK and Australia. Cool!

Funny, my mother's maiden name and my main heritage doesn't even resonate on the map at all. Sheesh!

As many other users have already noted, the map is not displaying countries other than US, Canada, all of Western Europe, Australia and Argentina... weird, huh?

well it's as i thought - highest in Germany, decent in the US, but surprisingly there was a nice population of my family's name in the UK and in Italy and Argentina. go figure on that one since i didn't think that there was anyone of our family's relation in those places
