India's Right Wing Threatens Violence Over English Store Signs

Right-wing parties in India want to restore the dominance of the Marathi language in the city of Mumbai. The Maharashtra Reconstruction Party is demanding language changes, and since it's not happening fast enough, they have threatened to attack stores that use English signs, instead of or more prominently than Marathi signs.

One regional party leader said:

People are insulting Marathi pride with smaller signs. We will not back down. Traders can take this as a warning or a suggestion, it's up to them.

Businesses, including McDonald's, have responded to the threats by quickly changing their signs, while others have resisted.

In the US, by 2042 whites will no longer be the majority and groups including Hispanics, blacks, and Asians, will in combination outnumber non-Hispanic whites. If other languages remove English from its place of dominance, could you imagine groups using violent threats, like those in India, to assert the use of English in America?

" If other languages remove English from its place of dominance, could you imagine groups using violent threats, like those in India, to assert the use of English in America?"

No. English was imposed on India due to the British rule so the reason for the violence would be different. I understand wanting to retain ones roots and in this case ones language, but violence is NOT the way. It's very immature. These right wing groups need to understand that India has come so far economically, because they have adopted English as one of their official languages (the other being Hindi). English is after all, the language of globalization.

While I do think it's important to retain ones culture, the way in which these right winged groups do so, will get them no where. How sad that some Indians can so quickly forget the teachings of Ghandiji.

I can see Lou Dobbs leading this kind of action to get attention. But otherwise, I don't see it as a serious possibility.
Blacks, Hispanics and Asians are increasing their numbers in the U.S., but they are Americans, or came here to be a part of America, so I don't see what the big deal is.

I'm sick of you posting comments about how America is being run over by minorities...

Can you pls get a grip? The world will hopefully desegregate itself by mixing and mingling with other races (BIG HOPE). But keep droning on the prediction of minorities overtaking whities in 2042 makes you seem like such a scared racist.

Your America will still be ok if THE COMBINATION of all the minorities outweigh your whiteness.

Please, please, please stop perpetuating this 'non-news'. If you're so worried about minorities, get to work on your advancement and stop whining.

i think that people are trying really hard to bring culture and history back into today's society since it seems like we are so quick to want to adapt to the rest of the world. i can understand and respect the desire to have english taken off the signs, but in the same token, i feel like a lot of countries depend on foreign funds for their economy and if people don't have a universal language that they can understand during their travels - then they are less likely to travel.

I agree with NYFashionista. Every time I'm in Mumbai, the majority of people speak Hindi. I would be completely lost if they started speaking in Marathi.

Am I alone in being able to "imagine groups using violent threats, like those in India, to assert the use of English in America"?

The reasons would be different, of course, but it seems to me that anti-immigration sentiment (particularly against Hispanics) runs quite high here, can lead to violence (I'm thinking particularly of those kids in PA who beat an illegal immigrant to death), and already manifests itself in the cultural battle over which language should be dominant. It seems like all the elements definitely could come together in a very negative and potentially violent way.

    Not entirely alone.
I can imagine a grandstander like Dobbs doing it for publicity tomorrow. The potential for random violence like you suggest is always there and a sign could spark it, sure. But an organized, political movement threatening violence seems unlikely, without some kind of divisive catalytic event.

I don't see why you have included African-Americans in your list; after all, though they are colored, don't they all speak English as their primary language? They don't have a separate language of their own, so where is the threat to the English language?
