Nancy, Hillary, and Michelle Show Up For EMILY's List

Citizen and I checked out out the EMILY's List event this week, attended by Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton. So what sort of organization attracts all three of these big-name women? EMILY's List is a political action committee that works to get pro-choice Democratic women in office.

The name of the game is talent and money. EMILY is in fact an acronym for "Early Money Is Like Yeast" — early money raises the dough, just like yeast! The group pairs seats that are realistically up for grabs with strong candidates, and then helps the women build and run a campaign with very early funding and guidance. Members of EMILY's List receive profiles of the up-and-coming pro-choicers, so they can donate to candidates running throughout the country. Here are pictures of the members in Denver.

EMILY's List drew an eager crowd of supporters, but vocal opponents came out to graphically protest abortion, too. To see video of one critic of EMILY's List, read more.

i think that i've heard of this group but never really knew that their premise was and what they worked for. i think that it's a good platform though and that with the support of these three women, it can get stronger legs and really make an impact on people who share the pro choice belief.

I never heard of this organization but I'm glad it exists. Hopefully it has an impact in upcoming elections.

"pro-abortion"? Hard to take someone seriously after that!

I don't think progress will be made until both sides admit that we ALL want to see abortions reduced. Pro-Choice people are not "pro-abortion"...that is why the motto is "Safe. Legal. Rare". Someone also needs to tell her that "botched" abortions occur much more frequently when abortions are illegal, and that abortions have been proven to be fewer when 1.) contraception is available 2.) Abortions are legal 3.) Sex Education is comprehensive.

We all want to keep the number of abortions down, so lets focus on what we can really do to make that happen.

    "Pro-abortion"? Nice touch.

Excellent points, Jill. And yes, "botched" abortions (oh, the good ol' days of wire coat hangers...) really do happen when SAFE practices are made illegal.

I'm sick of people making pro-CHOICE people out to be baby-eating monsters.

Oh how I love those pro-life signs.

There was this huge truck driving around Boulder yesterday with a giant aborted baby plastered to it. I am all for freedom of speech, but IMO, there's a time and a PLACE for everything. I really dislike shock attacks. I really really really dislike them.

Sorry, it was an enlarged picture - not an actual aborted baby that was plastered to the truck.

I am not a fan of the acronym for this organization.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of its mission either. I am pro-choice I just hate to think that a person's stance on one-issue is enough for them to receive all this special treatment.

    This organization disturbs me.

I'm prolife, but I agree with what you guys said about "pro-abortion", that just angers people.

Totally agreed, Jillness. I feel like the anti choice crazies are missing the whole point be harping on the legality of abortion. If your mission is to stop abortion you will be more successful by working to reduce the need for them in the first place.

I should probably clarify that I don't think everyone opposed to abortion is a crazy...just the small subset of that group that does the crazy things.

Yeast? In the title of a women's organization? That's pretty funny.
