British Behavior Abroad: Just Like Americans on Spring Break!

Forget about ugly Americans, Britons are proving themselves too wild for the rest of Europe. Locals of Greek vacation destinations told the New York Times that young Brits make their presence known by brawling, getting violently sick, crowding clinics for the morning-after pill, screaming and singing in public, taking their clothes off, and falling over in the middle of the street.

Many British travel companies offer packages popular for the cheap alcohol. It sounds like these young Brits treat their Summer holidays like American spring break.

If a bad hangover and a couple of bruises sound bad to you, the actions of these party animals have more serious consequences, too. Between 2006 and 2007, 602 Britons were hospitalized and 28 raped in Greece, while 1,581 died in Spain where another 2,032 were arrested. And the Brits have taken their trouble out of Europe, too. Remember the woman sitting in a Middle Eastern prison for having sex on a public beach in Dubai?

To find out what the British government plans to do about its unruly citizens, read more.

Taking a diplomatic approach, the British consulate in Athens began a marketing campaign to urge travelers to drink responsibly. Local officials want to go after the companies that sell bad behavior vacation packages. What do you think could get Brits to change their ways?

I guess they are so uptight at home, they are ready to burst.
But it is sick, and they are only hurting themselves: rape, stds, etc.

Is there anything that CAN change their ways? That's ridiculous! People are dying pointlessly. I don't know but I think that capital punishment maybe???? An eye for an eye??? Who knows!!!

I can tell you I experienced British drunkeness while I was in Poland. My cousin, who lives in Krakow, is a bartender and often told me the popular reason why Brits come to Krakow is for bachelor parties and cheap, good beer. It costs about 1 pound for .5L.

The northern Brits I came across... I barely understood them sober. Drunk. I just plain gave up. Laughing out loud

The opinion of wild Britons from those on the continent has been around for a long, long time. Hen and Stag parties and cheap holidays filled with alcohol are a staple in British culture. I don't think being up tight at home has anything to do with letting loose when aboard for the Brits. The drinking culture in Britain is huge so why wouldn't it continue on vacation? I live in Ireland and I see hen and stag parties in Dublin all of the time. The issue I see is a complete lack of respect for the country visited. The visitors are in and out of the city so quickly it seems like they just couldn't be bothered! This sometimes goes for American tourists as well sadly!

I agree with rebeccafm - this has nothing to do with being "repressed" at home. The way these people behave on their holidays is pretty much the same way they behave at home. I used to live in the UK, so I've experienced it first-hand.

But it's not just the people's fault. There are certain places in Eastern/Southern Europe that thrive on this kind of "booze tourism" (e.g. Mallorca, Ibiza, some Greek Islands) and have no interest in discouraging it.
