Top 10 Things You Don't Know About John McCain

With all this wall-to-wall Dem coverage, what with the convention and Biden and all, I needed a little palate cleanser — a little sorbet for the conservative soul, if you will. I found this juicy list of answers to all of your McCain mysteries. Here are the top 10 things I didn't know about him — hamsters, fried turkeys, and all:

  • He's a thespian! He played the part of Scrooge in the POWs' staging of A Christmas Carol while being held in Hanoi.
  • Email or no, he stays in touch. He chats with the men he shared a cell with in Vietnam almost daily.
  • Scandalous! His parents "eloped" to Tijuana, Mexico — though McCain's grandfather accompanied them.

  • He's a drill sergeant on vacation. He's a wall-to-wall planner. His children call it "Camp McCain."
  • I believe this is probably one of those "Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting" deals— apparently he has a stuffed dancing hamster on display in his Senate office.

To see the rest, from what's he's reading to his grandkids (!), read more.

  • Not on the Oprah Book Club (that I know of) but his favorite book is For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway.
  • Penny for his thoughts — he carries a lucky penny in his pocket.
  • All in the family: McCain has seven kids. Two he adopted from his first wife's previous marriage, one born to him and his first wife, three born to him and his second wife, and the one they adopted from Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangladesh. This surprised me: He also has four grandchildren.
  • A true extrovert, he doesn't like to be alone.
  • Not particularly healthy fare, but he likes to deep fry turkeys in peanut oil. Gobblers in Goobers. Come on. That's a good one.

What do you think? Any shockers? Any explanation for the dancing hamster?

I love dancing hamsters! Smiling Seriously!

I am a little surprised they had POWs performing theater when they were being held as prisoners. Learn something new everyday!

i think that these things make him more human. i like him a bit more and i'm a democrat. go figure! aside from his choice in Romney - i would have voted for him - but nope - now i can't do it. even if he does have a sordid past w/ his parents eloping and all. it's character building i think

Here we have Greenberg smoked turkeys. It is what I have had every Christmas and Thanksgiving my whole life. The company is in my home town. oprah even featured them as one of her "favorite things" one year, now you have to put your order in for the next year when your pick up for this year! And you wait in line for like two hours. They are heaven though. They kind of ruin you for all other turkey.

Last year, we had a brined turkey (Alton Brown recipe from Good Eats is amazing!), and a smoked turkey. They both were very tastey...but I have to say the smoked turkey made REALLY good Turkey Pot Pie the next day!

Ohhh, you're killing me. Thanksgiving/Christmas is my all time, hands down, favorite meal. With cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes and giblet gravy. Wow, this is torture.

Oh man I was just thinking about Thanksgiving/Christmas turkeys yesterday. While helping my husband organize the attic we found the turkey roaster, which only comes out then, and I've been wanting some ever since. My husband did an awesome spread complete with some butternut squash soup. I got super lucky finding a man that is a good cook. Smiling

I can't wait for BBQ Turkey. Sighs. You all made me hungry. Corn Bread dressing, greens, candy yams, cornish hens, sweet potato pie, homemade mac and cheese. When will November get here.

    Thanks for clarifying, Laura.

Its so funny how many men have a version of those dancing hamster things in their office. I have had several bosses so far that had one. I bet McCain's is the Navy version.

I really didn't like him at first, but the more I learn about the McCains, the more I like them. He has my vote.
