Georgian Conflict Created by Cheney to Make Obama Lose?

Russians were told yesterday morning that the true nature of the conflict in South Ossetia is this: it's a plot hatched by Vice President Dick Cheney to make sure Barack Obama isn't elected president. Is Cheney creating a Cold War 2.0?

This revelation, that the conflict is orchestrated to wing Obama, was first announced on the radio and has been getting wide play. A senior political analyst close to Putin and Medvedev says, “George Bush's Administration is promoting interests of candidate John McCain. Defeated by Barak Obama on all fronts, McCain has one last card to play yet — the creation of a virtual Cold War with Russia . . . Bush himself did not want a war in South Ossetia but his Republican Party did not leave him any choice.”

The notion has reinvigorated Cold War-era talk like this from a former ambassador to the EU:

The West has spent a lot of time, energy and money to teach Georgia the tricks of the trade . . . to make the country look like a democracy. We and many other nations see through this deceit. We understand that the seditious tactics of the so-called color revolutions are a real threat to international law and the source of global legal nihilism.

To see where this idea came from, read more.

Russia's Cold War conclusion comes in no small part from what they perceive to be a compliant US media. One woman from Moscow says, “In the old days under Soviet rule we didn't believe a word of our own propaganda but we thought that information was free in the West and we longed for it. But we have learnt since that the West has its own propaganda and in some ways it is more powerful because people believe it.”

Is there a big US propaganda machine in full effect? Is Cheney pushing the US toward another Cold War just so Obama won't win — or is this just a ridiculous conspriacy theory?

Citizen, this is not a "revelation," it is a crazy conspiracy theory.

    revelation, def:
    1. the act of making known a truth which was previously secret
    2. a fact newly made known

Oh, but Putin and Medvedev are honest and forthright, and have no bias in this discussion.

I agree, the story seems... outlandish. I do think it's worth knowing that this is the story Russians are being told. It further rounds out our understanding of the situation, and highlights that there are vast numbers of ways to perceive a story, to be sure.

Is Cheney even that powerful? I also don't understand how cold war automatically translates to a McCain victory.

Well I have faith that the Russian people are too smart to buy this.

This seems a little too diabolical to be true. Instigate a war purely to give some one a perceived edge in an election?

Well, Citizen, if this is the story the Russians are being told then it is important that we hear it too. If this generates Russian animosity to us, then at least we will know the source. Thanks for keeping us informed. Smiling

sadly, i wouldn't put it past cheney. at it's heart, i think this is more about oil... but the by-product of this kind of conflict bolstering mccain's scare tactic-style campaigning sure doesn't hurt his chances of winning in november. i am predicting a military police state in the US by october.

i just posted this in the other thread about this helping mccain's campaign -- thought you all might find it interesting. its an article from 2004 about how the US has had troops in georgia since 2002 and helped set up the georgian government... and why.

i see this from so many sides. on one, the russians could just be saying this to make them look less of the bad guys and point the finger at a country (U.S) that's already got a bad global rep when it comes to raiding other countries. on another, i'm always game for a good political conspiracy theory, especially when there are so many floating around about obama. i'm pretty suspicious of the government anyway.

it wouldn't surprise me if a vast amount of people really do buy this, though. with so many people believing the mccain propaganda machine (half truths, etc) and others buying into conspiracy theories that obama is the "ultimate sleeper machine" and not a "naturalized american citizen" i would say that some people would believe anything. the question is, will it have the appropriate effect or will it backfire (on whomever is responsible for the rumor or "truth," be it Cheney and GW or Putin)?

I wish I could find out what was happening in the disputed territories that made Georgia activate their military to begin this whole thing. I feel that information is so important.

The oddest thing about this article I thought was the "GW wanted to stop them but he was too powerless against the Republican Party." Not a direct quote but the gist. GW is still president, right? Not DC? Couldn't he keep them from starting a war if he really wanted to? Last time I checked, president trumped vice-president.

I think people will beleive what they want to beleive, esp. about an area thats not widely known. But I don't think this will escalate into another war. After all, its in Russia's best interest to not have a tough US president.

    LOL

Though I'm none too fond of VP Cheney, I still think this theory is ridiculous.

I agree about the propaganda comments, though. The propaganda machine (AKA the media) in the US is more subtle, which does make it more powerful and dangerous.

After reading this article I rubbed my eyes and when they opened I was in a bed of manure and Oliver Stone was handing me a handkerchief with a welcome sign in his hand.

Look I can't stand Dick Cheney as much as the next person who can't stand Dick Chaney, but let's keep it real people. Now I will agree that the situation in question does help bolster the image that Sen. McCain's campaign has been pushing and that the campaign will use every opportunity to illustrate Sen. McCain’s strengths against the real world situation. But this is a benefit that comes as a result of the situation and has nothing to do with the manifestation of the situation.

If there are any liberals pushing this claim than you have truly put the radical in liberal and you might want to have some one look at that bleeding heart.

Cheney is the evil puppet master, but even I (a liberal liberal who believes the right orchestrates all kinds of terrible events in an effort to strengthen its power) think this is a little suspect.

As for the propaganda issue in general that I agree with 100% The U.S. is very talented at hiding behind the cloak of the American image and using to blind side the American public when they want to infiltrate certain opinions into the collective consciousness.

I don't think Cheney orchestrated but have no problem in saying that the machine is in full gear here, spinning this as poor democratic Georgia against evil Russia and do we have a big strong hero to protect them.

McCain has claimed on a few occasions that Obama wants to lose the war in Iraq in order to win the presidency. To me that claim is just as insidious and absurd as this one is - perhaps moreso - given that it's coming straight from him and not the Soviet propoganda machine.

Also, I'm not surprised that the Russians have a different take on this. Most of us at least try to be informed and even we're having a heck of a time even understanding what happened and why.

I can only imagine the same confusion and doubting of sources is happening all over, and to a much greater extent given that information is more tightly contolled elsewhere than it is here.

I completely agree that we should know what they are being told. I just think it's bizarre that someone would believe this claim.

@cabaker: "not in russia's interest to have a tough US president," who exactly would that "tough" president be in your opinion? military force is not the solution to everything, and having a president that thinks it is, wouldn't make him "tough," it would make him shortsighted and simplistic. these are real people's lives involved in such decisions, decisions which have far reaching and long lasting consequences, trying to be the loudest & toughest sounding guy in the room is the quickest way to find yourself in a giant mess.

What is scary about Cheney, I think, is that he does things so outrageous, they seem unbelievable. I don't know if he had a hand in this, but if he did, I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm a bit of a news junkie, but I still have to admit to being confused about what exactly started the conflict in the first place. I heard a blurb about "ethnic cleansing" accusations, but on which side? Can anyone sum up what started the hostilites? Oh, if Cheney is powerful enough to make two independent foreign countries go to war with one another, I'm scared.

I don't believe that Cheney had anything to do with this conflict. I find this to be a spin-off of the "hate Bush" phenomenon.

I find the "hate Bush" phenomenon to be a spin off of the "Bush is a sucky president" phenomenon.

But Cheney is a different creature. He's never going to run for anything again, so he's got nothing to lose.

Sorry, I just realized that sounded weird. I know Bush will never run for anything again either, but he has a legacy to worry about, whereas no one remembers vps. A lot of other vps, though, will try to run for president.

I'll agree that I haven't liked several things that the Bush administration has done. The "hate Bush crowd" was around from the 2000 election, after it was decided that he had won, and that wasn't acceptable to that group.
