India and Australia Solve Food and Planet Woes With Dinner

Fire up the barbie, two countries are putting some creative meat alternatives on the menu: one to combat hunger, one to save the planet.

Given meat's effect on the climate, Australia is looking at how they can help and still have a chop every once in a while. Livestock grazing accounts for 11 percent of the country's emissions. The plan to remove seven million cattle and 36 million sheep by 2020 will lower greenhouse gases by three percent a year. What is on the menu instead? Replacing cows and sheep with kangaroo will give Aussies the same amount of meat for a much smaller eco-footprint.

Though kangaroo-kabobs seems odd, India's plan to combat hunger could be less palatable. To see what it is, read more.

And Indian officials have solved the plan of national hunger by letting them eat rats. Sound cheesy? The plan would stop the rodents from eating the grain stock, 50 percent of which is eaten by them. The plan is wide sweeping — everyone from fancy on down would chow on the squeakers. Of course, there's the idea of it to get around. The plan's architect says, "The only issue is how people react to rat meat, but I think it will not be a problem. Some socially deprived people in Bihar have always consumed rat meat. If they can eat rats, why can't the rest of the people?"

Why not indeed? Would you eat rat or kangaroo?

Ew. I try not to eat much meat in general, so given the choice I'd just give it up entirely.

No, don't think so. I am a HUGE carnivore, but would go meatless if only given these two choices.

Well for me it would be a matter of survival and of course I would eat rat meat if I had to. Other than cattle, hog & poultry I've had wild bore, bison, alligator, rabbit & ants. I've also had beef within a matter of a few hours after slaughter and that is still hands down the best meat I have ever eaten in my life. I can still taste it after 33years, lol. I imagine Kangaroos will taste a lot like deer.

I certainly won't eat either type of meat, and can't stand the thought of eating one of the national symbols of Australia. Ugh...though I can see why they're being considered.

I'd sooner go vegetarian; it's healthier that way anyhow.

I could never eat rat or kangaroo meat. I'm to picky an eater.I have not eaten beef since I was about 5 years old.

Hypno you sound like several of my family members. They've eaten every thing from turtle to squirrel. My grandmother raised chickens and would wring their necks, pluck them, cut it up, and then fry it. One of my uncles was so traumatized by watching it, he refuses to eat chicken.

No way! I can't even think about it! Obviously my disgust with the idea has something to do with the fact that I live in America and I see kangaroos as an exotic animal, but still. Ick!

I would eat both, if they were of course clean and inspection

And vegetarian isnt the "healthier" alternative, its just an alternative.

"Kangaroos are shot in the outback- a region noted for heat, dust and insects. Domestic animals are present with their usual suite of diseases contaminating the environment. Male and female kangaroos are shot. The females will usually have two young at the time of shooting.
The younger one is torn from the pouch and, whilst making attempts to escape, is bashed to death either by stamping on its' head or by swinging it against the shooters' vehicle. The other, which has already left the pouch but is still reliant for milk, warmth, protection from predators and psychic support from its' mother, will escape and usually die within a few days from starvation, hypothermia, perdition or accident.
The numbers of young, which are, killed each year number in the millions. For every animal, which enters the meat trade, two more animals die agonising deaths over a period of time The kangaroo meat trade is unparalleled in the cruelty it inflicts."

Sounds like this solution needs a little refinement.

well that's certainly a creative way to combat the way that the earth is changing. i'm kind of glad that i'm a vegetarian so i don't have to think about having a kangaroo instead of beef - but i guess if you're used to those types of food then it's not such a big change. besides - people have really been expanding what they are used to eating that maybe this is more normal that even i realize.

Lol, they have been eating Kangaroo for years. And yeah, old roo is cute, but have you seen a cows face? They are adorable. Cute but yummy. It's the circle of life. And Hypno, I'm like you, I've eaten tons of different types of meats. Alligator, shark, turtle, rabbit, Quayle, dove, deer, elk, wild boar, sucked the brains from crawdads, etc. I even killed, skinned, cleaned, cooked and ate a rattle snake while camping. It truly tasted like chicken.

wow, neither. Sad they both sound less than appetizing. are they going to have livestock farms for these animals, or will the wild variety be eaten? i don't even like eating venison, so i definitely won't chow on wild rat.

I think I'd rather have kangaroo than rat, but kangaroo seems like it would be really tough and gamey. I love meat.

For the people that said I would just go vegetarian, GO VEGERTARIAN!!!

Global Warming is a serious flippin problem!!!

Not only is global warming indisputable at this point, vegetarian being more healthy is also indisputable.

Has Caterpillar girl ever heard of Gary Null?

Gary Null is an amazing PhD that has proved being a vegan can cure type 1 and type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and grow back hair in balding men among other things!!!!

He is not the first to conclude the result of vegetarian/vegan diets. Even ABC news did a report about curing cancer through a vegan diet.

Props to the meat eaters that said they would try it.

All I can say is that I urge people to learn more about peak oil, global warming and water scarcity.

Please read the Blue Covenant by Maude Barlow, Oil Depletion Protocol by Richard Heinberg or anything by Gary Null!

Don't forget that pharmaceutical companies make big bucks from cancer etc.!

MD Free I have heard of Gary Null and his claims have never ever been proven in the medical community. If they have please give me the source, link, trial, whatver you have to back that up. He does not have an accredited science degree, and really he is a businessman at heart, and like any good owner will promote his products even if the claims aren’t proven.

In his “bee pollen” infomercial he falsely claimed that the human body ages because it doesn’t produce enough enzymes and that the pollen is “loaded” with enzymes, and the FTC prosecuted the producers of that show for false information.

    • Brainy II—"Power packed with Phosphatidyl Serine, herbs, amino acids, anti-oxidants and B-vitamins to help you achieve optimal brain function." [How has he determined that the product can help people improve brain function?]
    • Anti-Aging Program—"Every flavorful sip of the "Aromatic Shake" contains seven of my most successful formulas for promoting age-reducing properties directed at maintaining nutritional and total wellness. [What is an age-reducing property? What is total wellness? Can any product maintain total wellness?]
    • Detox Formula—"A gentle, highly comprehensive balance of botanicals used in traditional Western and Asian herbal systems to aid the body in its internal cleansing" [What is "internal cleansing"?]
    • Eternal Herbal Supplement—"A potent rebalancer and herbal tonic for both men and women." [What gets "rebalanced"? How can people tell whether they are "out of balance"?]
    • Gary's Green Stuff—the product of the low temperature dehydration of green chlorophyll-rich foods that are also sources of phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, amino acids, anti-oxidants and trace minerals. Available in powder or capsule form. Awarded a Seal of Approval from the Diabetes Resource Center. [People can and should get the phytonutrients they need from foods. Chlorophyll has no health-related value for humans [4]. The Diabetes Resource Center [5], which was operated by a woman who had no health-related credentials, ceased operations in 1998.]
    • Null-Trim—a powdered mix containing protein from both soy and rice sources, carbohydrates and other nutrients such as guar, chromium, gamma oryzanol and lipoic acid which make this formulation ideal for weight loss or exercise programs. [I see nothing among the ingredients that I believe is useful for weight-loss or exercise programs.]

You know where the phrase "sacred cow" came from? India because Hindus believe in reincarnation. So if they're allowed to eat the rats, what happens if that's grandma reincarnated as a rat? Does that mean that the person is a cannibal?

Why not just kill some of those cows and eat the beef?

Australia is being silly. Global Warming is a cycle of the Earth and nothing more. We'll have Global Cooling in a few years and then what? Australia will try to find a Country to buy some cattle from to raise their own beef again so they can warm up their Continent.

JUST live your life and conserve as much as you can without creating too much litter and garbage and trash. ReDuce, ReUse, ReCycle. AND have lots of children because there are not enough babies being born to sustain the growing elderly population. Have three or more to make up for those not having any and for China only allowing one child per couple. It's not good for kids to be "only children" in a household.

And while you're at it, kill that sacred cow and barbecue the beef!

I've had kangaroo steak at a nice restaurant and kangaroo kabobs on the bbq (in australia of course) and they were TASTY! I think they just have to be marinated well and the meat is surprisingly tender and, to me, less gamey than venison.

I admire vegetarians! It's a tough life. I try to eat a low meat diet, but I like that my diet is flexible. For example, today I went to an event with a lunch, and the entrees available were either chicken or beef. If I were a vegetarian, I would have had salad and bread for lunch. But I don't ever buy raw meat to cook at home, just have it in prepackaged things (like forzen pizza), when I eat out, or sometimes lunch meat (though it's so expensive, not normally).

Sorry this is a tangent, but I saw something (from PETA, maybe?) encouraging people to make one day a week a non-meat day and work up from there, and I think that's much more realistic.

What outcry of climatologists who say Gore has it wrong?
And who says Gore is the last word on the matter? Are these scientists reputable? Where do they work? Actual labs or think tanks? What are their areas of specialization? Have they actually studied the matter, or are they scientists commenting on other people's work?
