Reputations die hard — especially when you're a gorgeous country who's historically been mired in conflict, giving you the reputation of "Warning! Tourists Keep Out!" Just today the US Embassy in Djibouti warned against American travel to the African port city — branding it scary in addition to its beauty.

For countries with historic conflict raging among dazzling nature, the economic impact lingers from not only the strife, but the lasting legacy of a scary reputation — shooing would-be vacationers away. The brilliant minds at ProTraveller have put together a stunning list of the top six places to make sure you see, as peacefulness is restored and splendor beckons.

  • Indonesia: (pictured here) If you thought the US had a hard time uniting politically, the 17,000 islands of Indonesia had bigger troubles. Since the first direct presidential election in 2004, the situation has improved, and the beaches make this tropical paradise worth the trip.

  • Cambodia: Recovering from a 1997 coup, assistance from other developed nations has opened the doors for visits to temples, beaches, and the striking city of Phnom Penh.
  • To see where else you should skip off to, read more.

  • Angola: Topping lists of post-conflict countries developing peace, this Africa nation's rugged landscape is breathtaking.
  • Peru: Border conflict ceased in 1998, allowing travelers to once again head to the mountaintop city of Machu Pichu.
  • Northern Ireland: Twenty-five years of strife leading to the 1998 Belfast Agreement has unleashed this emerald gem, becoming a progressive country with a thriving city life.
  • Croatia: Though the 1990s saw a war for independence and recovery is ongoing, this EU and NATO hopeful boasts the lush countryside and coastline perfect for visiting.

Pack up your passport and leave your courage at home. Check out the full list for more guidebook-worthy pictures and reasons to go. These countries are on the mend with the welcome mat out.

There is a book "Honeymoon with my Brother" that is so good. It's about a man whose fiance left him days before their wedding and as a healing process his brother suggested he still go on his honeymoon. Well they changed the honeymoon a bit and ended up taking a trip to several different countries. It's a wonderful story and it's very eye opening about the cultures of the other countries. I enjoyed the book because it wasn't your typical, we went to Paris and saw the Eiffel tower and the Louvre etc.. They went to places where starving children were playing in the street and hugging their legs. It's funny and poignant. In the start of the book I kept thinking this guy is a jerk, no wonder his fiance left him.. but I will say that I think his travel experiences changed him and by the end of the book I no longer thought he was a jerk. I think this is really great reading for anyone who wants to travel, especially to the non-touristy places. The book is now a permanent fixture in my personal library.

    I LOVED that book, kimpossible.

I've been eyeing Croatia for a while now. The coast looks gorgeous! But, that's all in my fantasy world for now.

    me too jennifer!!

I would love to go to Peru. I can't wait to start international travel! My hubby is going overseas in July for work and I'm so jealous Sad Hopefully I can join him on another trip in the future, but if not we already have plans of traveling out of the US when the children are older and more independent or out of the house lol. In the meantime we're very happy exploring the US. Smiling

My parents did the same thing, Kim. When I left for bootcamp, suddenly they were going to Honduras and New Zealand. I was like... why didn't we go anywhere cool when I was around???

Oh please! I always laugh when the US government says its not safe to travel wherever for whatever reason right now: how is it safer to stay in the US? Yeah, there might be guerrillas or drug trafficking risks in other places, but here the danger is for terrorism; no place is absolutely safe, there are very few exceptions in my book, just me...

Uh.... gabiushka... I would like to mention that the likelihood of there being a terrorist attack here vs. really... virtually... 90% of the countries I think of... is pretty slim.

LOL Mondaymoos. I know our children will probably say the same thing. However, they have seen more of the United States than the majority of their peers and even more than many adults we know. We do take them traveling, but travel here in the US is so much easier with 4 children, besides there is so much to learn from all the different places. Even though it's all the same country, each state or city that we visit has it's own special feel and culture that is so interesting. I'm so grateful that we're able to do this with our children. I wish more people had the opportunity to do so, or even the desire.

I've visited Peru before it was "safe to travel" and really the worst that ever happened was that you would lose power for the night because the Marxist guerillas downed the lines. I've heard of much worse happening in other places that were "safe." The country is great, the people are friendly and the sights are incredible. (And I'm not just saying that cuz I'm half-Peruvian!)

I do find it quite strange that Angola should be in the same list as Croatia or N.Ireland (which are safer than some parts of NY). My boyfriend works in different parts of Angola and it surely is far from safe. Besides the high criminality there are also horror stories of deadly snakes (like the black mamba) and spiders... I love travelling to unusual places a lot, but Angola will have to wait to get on my list.

I'd take Indonesia or any of these interesting places over 'a clean beach in the Caribbean' any day.

I've done most of Europe, and I am itching to explore Central & South America as well as Western Asia (India, Nepal etc). Plus I'd love to travel more into Africa.

But for now I can't afford to leave South Africa, he he - got to work on that savings account.

My family is originally from Croatia and one of the families actually has a cottage on the coastline in Croatia and they are constantly encouraging us to visit.

Try Israel and Jordan as well. Petra should be a must-see on everyone's travel list. Next up for me is Christ the Redeemer.

Mozambique should be on the list. The Brazil of Africa. Maputo is happening, construction everywhere. Great food. Friendly folks. Great music scene. Excellent Rock Fishing off the islands. Loved it.

    Cambodia
    Mali
    Ethiopia
    Syria

All great countries to visit. Felt no danger (except for land mines in Cambodia....watch your step)
