Sharon Stone Apologizes for "Karma" Remark. But What Is It?

Sharon Stone has become a bit of a Karma Chameleon, and apologized for her statement that the earthquake was China's Karma coming back to haunt them.

She said, "Due to my inappropriate words and acts during the interview, I feel deeply sorry and sad about hurting Chinese people." She's been removed from Dior ads in China following the incident.

Karma is an important concept for Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs — but what is it exactly? The word translated simply means "action". The doctrine of karma developed and taugh by the Buddha, a spiritual teacher thought to have lived about 2,500 years ago. It simply means, whatever comes into existence does so in response to the conditions at the time, and in turn affects what comes after it. How was Sharon Stone wrong? To find out, read more.

One teacher at the London Buddhist Centre, says that Stone's take on karma is misguidedly common. Her statement was incorrect, pegging an outcome the result of something done in the past, or a past life. The law of karma says the motive behind one's actions actually affects the outcome of that particular act. According to the teacher:

So an intentionally ethical action - for example to promote kindness, generosity, contentment — is more likely to have positive, beneficial consequences. An intentionally unethical one - to promote self-aggrandizement or greed — will be more likely to have unhelpful, even harmful consequences. Unhelpful, that is, for the positive well-being of either the doer or the recipient or both.

Stone might have been ignoring the other factors that Buddhists believe cause events — biological factors like viruses, psychological factors like stress, and environmental factors like the weather.

The Buddhist teacher concludes, "The earthquake in China or the cyclone in Burma have much to do with environmental factors," says Dhammadassin. "To invoke karma is more to do with our desire to nail things down and find someone to blame. But that's not ours to do."

Was her apology enough? Do people in the spotlight have a greater responsibility to understand concepts they speak about publicly?

Only in Hollywood would someone think that anyone cares that they say something completely stupid about a global event. Especially a has-been.

Kris - That would also help her career. Hollywood loves it when stars appear to be like the "normal people".

Is English not her first language, or is she still drunk?

"The doctrine of karma developed and taugh by the Buddha" should be "taught".

Anyway, I can't see the Chinese people forgiving her any time soon. I just hope they realize that attitude is NOT reflective of how "the West" feels. I think sometimes gross statements like this end up inciting anger towards a group rather than the individual.

As for whether celebrities should be educated about topics before they open their mouths, that's great in theory but in practice? Uh. We should all strive to abide by those rules. Sadly, most of us probably think we do.

Yeah she was off the hook that night. Did you see the clip where she was harassing Sean Colms (P Diddy) for a $320,000 donation. Telling him that if he can afford those earrings he can afford $320,000. Then she had the balls to sit in his lap and tell him he's full of sh*t.

Girlfriend needs to check her prescriptions because she's crossing something.

think before you speak and know what you're talking about... what's so hard about that, I don't think anyone, especially people who are in the limelight should be exempt from that...

As a Buddhist, when I heard those comments, I thought to myself "Oh no, she is so out of touch." While Buddhists see the world and events differently than those who don't subscribe to the ideas behind karma, you would never use it in an accusatory way, as I think she did. We are all responsible for our own actions, and the deaths of all those people is nothing short of a huge tragedy. The Dalai Lama, whose name she threw in to her little comment, teaches a doctrine of compassion. There was nothing compassionate about her statement, and she should really reflect on the effects of her own karmic actions.

I guess when Dior pulled her ads in China she decided to act and make an apology. Not to metion China decided not to show any of her films. Mmm, it's so heart warming.

Dior dropping her ads in China: Is that "karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

She's so ignorant. If she saw the pictures of those children that died and their parents grieving beside them, would she still have made such a stupid, casual remark like that? She needs to educate herself before speaking in public about anything, ever again.

i do agree that people in the spotlight should really learn about the ideas they are going to talk about. so many people look up to them and it's just really irresponsible of them to speak of something without knowing much about it.

her apology statement is not sufficient for the damage caused. i don't think such a simple statement will suffice.

    Dear China,
We truly do apologize for Sharon Stone, we apologize that she was given a forum to speak publicly, we apologize for the fact that she is considered a celebrity in our culture. Believe me we have tried to ignore her, hoping she would go away but she just keeps on coming back. China, I know that we dont normally see eye to eye on things such as human rights or freedom of press, but one thing we do agree on is that Sharon Stone sucks. Please accept our deepest apologies.
    Sincerely,
    The U.S

Sharon Stone's misunderstanding of the meaning of karma is common. Even so, I found her remarks to be cruel. She is to be more pitied than censored.
