Why Are People So Anti-Katie Couric?

It's almost impossible to find pro-Katie news out there recently — now it seems she might be in a couple of pots of hot water. Civil rights groups are on the anchor's case after the news program she helms ran what they're calling a report that was inaccurate and crass — and much like something they say Lou Dobbs would run.

Politico says this of the controversy:

The CBS newscast that carries her name recently aired a one sided and inaccurate report about illegal immigrant women who give birth to their children in the United States. The news story challenged the broader constitutional law of birthright citizenship and stated — without providing the correct context — that the births cost US taxpayers millions of dollars annually.

The original report makes this claim though a series of questions and answers from two different people that suspiciously arranges the information to prove the argument. Take a peek and see if you think it's one sided and innaccurate.

Given new reports out that show CBS Evening News's ratings are the lowest they've been in the history of ratings, is reporting like this to blame? How did the Today show darling tank the news? Are people just inexplicably anti-Katie?

Maybe people just don't feel that she is serious enough to have made the transition from the Today show to the evening news? Or maybe her legendary perkiness just rubs people the wrong way?

I've never watched her shows, so I personally have no opinion on her either way.

I'm not anti-Katie, but I can't lie it would be nice to get my Anderson Cooper fix on the CBS Nightly News!

I think to be a good anchor, you have to be a good reporter first and that Couric didn't spend enough time reporting to speak with authority when she presents the news. She went from local news to the Today in a relatively short period - she can interview well enough, but to me, she's a corporate climber and her work reflects that more than anything.

It's the Keanu Effect. She is too mediocre to be making millions of dollars a year. She reads the news for God's sake!

My fiance is apparently related to Keanu by marriage, but so far it hasn't gotten us even a single Point Break DVD.

I like her but I don't watch her newscast. I don't watch National TV News except CNN.

I think people don't like her because she's like one of those spunky annoying gymnasts from the Olympics. Their ok once every 4 years but you don't want to see one of those little troll girls every day and be reminded that you cannot flip and jump like they can.

I think it's spunky girl syndrome like with Rachel Ray. I don't have a problem with either of them. I mean I agree that I think an anchor or reporter should have more substance. Also in this day and age the female anchors and reporters are done up like starlets. Some of them wear SO much make-up it's kind of ridiculous. LOL

Ooooh you know who I can't stand!? The one on CNN she smiles constantly but her eyes never do. Jessica something. She grates on my nerves worse than any of them. She is SOOOO fake. Yellen? Jessica Yellen?

People are anti Katie Couric because people were never into her in the first place! She's just one of those people who for whatever reason garnered ridiculous media hype. She was never a big deal from the get go and now CBS is seeing that. I don't know one person who enjoyed watching her on the Today's show.

I say thank God for blogs because the news, TV, and magazines always act like so and so is so hot. Then you go online and REAL people speak the truth.

It is soooo easy for men, male anchors, etc.
Perkiness, corporate climber, media hype, spunky, naked. Gimme a break, people.

It has nothing to do with her being female - a guy could just as easily be dismissed as being too pretty, too stupid, too bland. She was wrong for the job from the beginning.

Katie Couric just irritates me. I watch the Today show much more now that she's gone. I don't think she's a good anchor at all. Ann Curry seems more professional than her.

she's perfect for morning news programs--sitting on couches, having conversations, doing human interest stories. she's perky enough to wake you up but not so annoying that you want to throw stuff at the tv. this, however, does not make for quality evening news reading.

i SO miss bob schiefert--he was smart and cute and wrinkly and easy to take seriously. i wanted katie to do well; i really did. i started watching her from day one, and by the end of the week i was bored to tears and felt completely uninformed about anything.

this is why i stick to NPR.

I like Katie, but I dislike her doing the news. Even Diane Sawyer has branched out. She should be more lively and smile, because her laugh is made for TV. I don't like her seriousness and she just tries way too hard.

The "reasons" behind the A. B. C. of the poll makes absolutely NO sense. Seriosuly, I like Katie Couric, but I know why there is so much anti-Katie Couric running rampant. Let's admit it, Katie Couric is a morning news personality...she's perky enough to wake you in the morning, she's more of a jovial smiley person (morning), and she's better at the fluff (morning). While she was great as a stand in on Date Line, she really isn't a "hard-hitting" reporter. So yeah, I like her...but give me a break...liking doesn't = BLIND!!!

remember on the Today show when she wore that shiny pinkish lipstick? it's just like I wore in junior high, and my dad (scientist) called me Tungsten Lips. anyway, she wore that stupid lipstick every day and the lights would reflect off of it, and it made her thin lips look all dried up and crusty. She still wears kind of sparkly shimmery lipstick and it's so WRONG!

Uh, no offense to Katie Couric's lipstick, but it seems that ladies in the media get stuck with aesthetic crap like this all the time. My dad doesn't like her because 'her mouth is huge!' I don't understand this. I really like her, and I'm sad to see her go. She was smart and very knowledgeable, and we get stuck with people complaining about her hair or her lipstick or how big her mouth is. Geez. When are women gonna get a break? I think you all need a feministsugar blog Eye-wink

As for the report, it doesn't really sound one-sided. Maybe a little insensitive to the mothers, but it doesn't really sound like it's bad information. I would guess it's intended to be provocative. The US government has been dragging it's heels and refusing to come to a compromise about immigration for far too long. Something needs to be done, and perhaps Katie Couric and the CBS evening news were trying to draw attention to the problem and trying to get someone to stand up and fix it.

Katie is a personality, not a news anchor. I like her as a host, but so far as the hop to CBS as an anchor, simply a move to increase her already sizable assets and who can blame her? Sorry Katie-did, you and news just don't mix.
