Fox is the highest rated cable news network... they are not going anywhere... aren't Colbert and the Daily Show some of the highest rated shows on Comedy Central? They aren't going anywhere either then....

Its all about ratings and there's always someone to make fun of... in the case of Fox News, if they are as biased as people think, then having a Dem for president is only going to add fuel to the fire!

I really don't get why people get up in arms about Fox News... they are no more biased to the right than the other stations are biased to the left... And there is only ONE of them! Pretty much every other station is biased to the left.... why can't the right have just one station??

I agree cabaker27, all other news outlets are biased to the left, i listen to FOX everyday while working. The O'Reilly factor, boosts the biggest news ratings over all the other cable news networks. FOX isn't going anywhere.

cabaker27 - I'm not sure about being up in arms, but most of the people I know that are not fans of Fox disagree with you greatly. We see the bias on Fox FAR worse than any other station. And we also find the idea of a "liberal media" to be bs, that it's a made up term that does not reflect reality, but that so many have bought into that campaign. We see no real equivalent to Fox News on the other side. I assume you disagree, but that's just how I and my other friends who are not fans of Fox see it.

As a liberal I think the leftist disdain for FOX news is really ridiculous. Yeah so the majority of Fox's hosts are conservative and if that is what I as a liberal am suppose to be alarmed about I'll pass thanks.

The fact of the matter is that although the majority of fox's hosts are conservative they always have on an opposing liberal view on to debate the issue. Such as Rev. Sharpton, Congressman Kucinich, Democratic National Committee members, noted liberal authors to challenge their views. This is where the motto fair and balanced is displayed through action, which is a lot more than I can say for MSNBC and CNN. Who seemingly have a perpetual liberal block party with every one agreeing with everyone, boorrriiinnnggg!

Even the despised Bill O’Reilly has gone on the record defending Sen. Obama against some unjust ridicule. Yeah, I’d like to see MSNBC & CNN doing that for President Bush. Where’s the fair and balanced there.

Fox was created by those who were tired of the liberal bias in the news. As such, the only way Fox will go away is if the rest of the news media outlets become "more fair and balanced."

Fox News is biased to the right the way the Pacifica Network is biased to the left - the broadcast other cable nets generally fall somewhere in between. We should either demand that they all do better than that, or clearly identify themselves as voices for the right or the left and not claim to be fair and balanced.
If it's about ratings, Gallup surveys show more far Americans identify themselves as conservative or moderate than liberal - so if CNN and MSNBC pander to liberals they're stupid.
Fox can just as easily be a mouthpiece for McCain; if a Democrat wins, they'll beat up on the President as loyal opposition. Having Clinton in the White House never hurt Limbaugh.

As I've said before in other topics. What wisdom is gained by surrounding ones self with agreeable opinions? I like fox because the issues are debated and you can choose your side. I don't find that quality on a consistent level with the other networks. I also enjoy watching and listening to conservative intellects because it give me something to measure my own opinions by.

Well, the thing with Colbert and Stewart, especially Stewart is that they don't mock just Bush. They mock pretty much everyone and everything, and if Obama becomes president, while I doubt they'll hate him nearly as much as Bush, they will still obviously mock him.
Whereas, FOX News is pretty much completely right-wing. They're going to have a harder time.

As for Colbert and Stewart, potc crazyy, comedy is a medium that will feel off anything in its path liberal or conservative.

i agree with you about the debates on fox though, often i've had to stop and question my own opinions because someone on the other side has brought up a good point... though i find they sometimes find the crazies on each side and pit them up against each other and then its hard to hear anything because they just scream over each other....

True it does get pretty heated at times. I just think the important thing to take away from this is that we all have our favorite outlets for information but we must still remain diligent in the pursuit of a well rounded intellectual diet. Too much of one thing can cause a bad case of tunnel vision.

I'm not a fan of Fox News but my opinion has no bearing on whether or not a station like it should exist. They have every right to be there with all the other networks despite their obvious subjectivity. Then, again, I hardly get my news from television. Most of the time, the stories, the debates, etc., are grossly sensationalized. Nowadays, most of my news is obtained from online newspapers.

To answer the question, Fox will survive. There are enough conservatives who will tune in regardless.

Are you really going to suggest to the minions that FOX is going to waist their time begrudging a fireworks display to the winner if it was Keary or Gore if that was the intended graphics for the winner in the first place. I am sure that FOX-y News had a graphic other than fireworks on hand in case Gore would have won. (Oops, he did win, I mean if he had been declared the winner) And they probably did not waste a graphic designer's time designing something for Kerry.

Well I'm not so much here to try to argue about the bias per se. I just wanted to let you know why the disdain for Fox exists since you didn't understand. It's a matter of perspective. I'm not going to bother looking at the study at this time, since I've also seen studies that reach a different conclusion, and we all know how stuff like that depends on methodology, which I have no desire to currently investigate. But I'll keep the link for future reading. I just don't have the time right now, but I'm sure I will eventually so this is my thanks in advance (whenever I get the chance to read).

The media isn't liberal or conservative, it's corporate and whatever sells reigns.

Fox hit the jackpot because it created a niche market and knows how to cater it's brand very well to that market, nothing more. Identifying as a conservative does nothing more than make it easier to be sold whatever they are selling.

As a matter of fact, when other news outlets noticed that Fox was doing well with the so called "conservative" market, they created shows to get a piece of the pie themselves.

If other stations have a so called "liberal" stance then it's because they want to create a niche and corner it.

It's about business, not news. I doesn't make you more informed to watch both IMO. The only thing this day and age that keeps any of us informed is research and cross checking sources to figure out their particular bias and slant. Time consuming, yes, but really the only way to keep up.

Focusing on your bias only helps you stay part of the demographic you chose to identify with, but don't kid yourself about being an informed citizen.

Of course Fox News can "survive." Regardless of who gets elected in November, the same people who watch Fox News now will likely continue to watch it in the future. As someone else mentioned, a Democrat being elected could be beneficial to Fox as it would "fuel the fire" for some conservatives.

Second, I read the article, but still don't think Fox News is going to disappear by any means. They're the one outspoken source on the right, even if they're not number one, they'll be sticking around. I can't say I see the same for the New York Times though.

Last, I think one of the issues I hold greatest with much of the media bias to the left is that it is unacknowledged and acted like it doesn't exist.

Fox news is so far to the right on many things that I have to take much of what they say with a grain of salt (or salt substitute as I'm supposed to be watching my sodium intake) but they don't hide how they are. CNN acts as if they are unbiased and I believe that it is far worse to pretend to be unbiased than to be blatant about who you are.

I like to watch all the stations fox and cnn and msnbc so I can hear what everyone is saying so that i feel like i am getting more information that is not biased

Sometimes when groups feel that they are being oppressed, is when their popularity surges. The Bush administration helped shows like The Colbert Repor(t) and the Daily Show, so I don't think that if we get a Democratic President that Fox will suffer too much.

I love Fox news. They really give me a better perspective on the news and politics in general. It's exciting and fun to watch.

cabaker27: the issue is that FoxNews claims to be unbiased. "Fair and balanced" is nothing more than a load of lies. They are clearly a conservative station. I wouldn't have so much of a problem with them if they just admitted that it was a conservative station. Oh and if they started telling the truth. And in case you try to disuade that fact: when the Mark Foley scandal broke they were the only station claiming that it was the democratic Mark Foley who was involved. They fake the news too much to be considered a legitimate station.
And while I agree that there is a liberal slant to other stations, I think too often people perceive a "liberal slant" when it is just the truth. The Bush adminstration was all about fear and hatred and what CNN and others did was to show how much of that was lies. Try to have some perspective here.

And lest us not forget that FoxNews hired Ann Coulter after she was fired from MSNBC for telling a Vietnam Vet that he was the reason we lost the war. The man had no legs for christsake. And she has gone on to more and more offensive banter since. And if you think she's a viable mouthpiece, here's this cheery bit of news: she doesn't think women should have the right to vote and that they can't handle money. She thinks that apartheid was a good system and that jews need to be "perfected". She claimed that a photojournalist who documented the American military's first months in Iraq was a traitor because she showed that a gate that the Bush adminstration had claimed to be a huge obstacle for the army, was nothing more than a toll booth gate.
What bothers me most about people claiming that FoxNews has unbiased news is that it clearly does (and those commentors who claimed that FoxNews doesn't hide its position, remember that their tagline is "fair and balanced") and too often their mouthpieces, Coulter, O'Reilly, Hannity, et all, just say things to be provocative and offensive. They know what they are saying is wrong and offensive and they know they'll have to apologize or retract it later. I couldn't care less if a conservative network existed, as long as it didn't claim to be anything else but that.

I do watch Fox News, among other stations, but I don't think they are unbiased and I don't think I know anyone who has ever claimed Fox to be unbiased. Not saying there isn't anyone out there, but it seems mosts people watch Fox because they are one of the view media points biased to the right.

Actually, Rupert Murdoch has said many times that he felt the need to balance left-wing media bias and therefore intentionally created a network that would give a Right wing biased slant to the news.

I don't think bias in the news should be encouraged at all. I don't like it when the other networks do it either, but IMO Fox is the most heavy handed.

I lost all respect when Shepard Smith reported that Saddam had been killed 6 different times during the first 3 months of the war. Every day it was "Saddam is dead!" or "WMDs Found!"...just rumors. I think Fox is a big reason why so many Americans to this day are confused about what was REALLY found in Iraq, and whether it is connected to Al Queda or not.

I think I might be understanding what you are saying: Fox does lean towards the right with it's employees and hosts, but as they invite on many people from the left (and far left) to present and discuss their view points that they thus provide a well rounded forum and views and as such are not as biased as others are making Fox out to be.

If that is it, which I think it is, I believe that is a pretty interesting view to bring to the table.

Very well thought and I like it indeed. (And this coming from someone who watches Fox and thinks they are biased, but then again I believe all news outlets are biased to some angle and degree.)
