  • Another new audio message allegedly delivered by Osama bin Laden urges Muslims to join the insurgency in Iraq, calling it the best way to support the Palestinians. He makes the tie between the two saying, "The nearest jihad battlefield to support our people in Palestine is the battlefield of Iraq." The statement was released on al-Jazeera TV, and comes just a day after he threatened Europe in a similar audio recording. The newest statement says of attempts at peace talks, "Palestine cannot be retaken by negotiations and dialogue, but with fire and iron."
  • Two employees have been fired from the State Department and another reprimanded for improperly opening electronic information from the passport file of Senator Barack Obama. The announcement came yesterday detailing three separate occasions of unauthorized access, in January, February, and March. The events are being called "imprudent curiosity," and there are no details yet as to reasons for the breach, or why the announcement only reached top officials and Senator Obama after the third occasion.
  • US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi arrived in northern India this morning for talks with the Dalai Lama and his Tibetan government-in-exile. Pelosi sharply criticized China saying, "If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China's oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world. The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world." The comments came during a meeting with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader. Pelosi noted that she was voicing her personal opinion and not US policy. The meeting comes amid violence surrounding Tibetan protests against China.

Things I find interesting about the Obama passport issue:

1.) The supervisor (consular affairs chief) under which the breeches occurred had been appointed as an ambassador to Paraguay from 1997-1999 by Bill Clinton.

2.) This supervisor, Maura Harty, retired last month.

3.) The 1st breech occurred 4 days before the "leak" of the photo showing Obama dressed in native garb with traveling internationally in Somalia.

4.) Why did it take so long to reveal the breeches to Obama's campaign?

It looks like Hillary's passport file was also breached; it just broke a few minutes ago, so I haven't heard any details yet. Does anyone know anything more about it?

I don't know; it's crazy, though. I may check out ABC. I just saw the headline on CNN.

The two fired employees, according to the story I heard, were temporary (contract) workers. I suspect it was just a case of having sufficient security clearance into the database, and human curiosity. I know I've checked things in our employee database at work which, although not security issues, were probably none of my business. (Lest you think I'm too subversive, I just wanted to see whether a vacancy for which some friends and I had interviewed had been filled. I had already told the interviewers that I was not interested, based on information in the interview.)

I think the bigger story is how Obama's campaign is blowing this up to distract from the Wright story. Now *that* makes me giggle.

Oh, and I'm a bit staggered that I agree with Pelosi on anything!

"I think the bigger story is how Obama's campaign is blowing this up to distract from the Wright story."

It is a breech of security, plain and simple. The fact that it wasn't reported for any candidate when it happened makes it a very big deal. Hillary's breech happened in 2007! A breech in security can be very dangerous. Considering we have 2 candidates who are "untraditional", I don't think it is a good idea to undermine their safety.

And it isn't just Obama's camp that thinks this is a big deal. Even Condi acknowledges that it should cause concern:

    (from Yahoo)
After speaking with Obama, Rice told reporters: "I told him that I was sorry, and I told him that I myself would be very disturbed."

    from CNN
The CEO of a company whose employee is accused of improperly accessing the passport files of presidential candidates is a consultant to the Obama campaign, a source familiar with the firm said Saturday.
