I am in a Starbucks state and I don't drink coffee. For the most part Walmart gets run out of all the cities and towns. To be honest I didn't even know there was one in Portland until I drove past on my way to some place out in the middle of nowhere. They tried to build one in Beaverton (home of Nike) and so many people showed up at the city meeting Walmart packed it and moved on out. They tried the town where I grew up and the same thing happened nobody wanted them there. It was awesome!

I have lived in Wal-Mart states all my life...though my hometown refused to let Wal-Mart build there until a couple years ago when they finally agreed to our mayor's strict building codes. Our Wally World is brick, with stucco columns. For real.

I hate Wal-Mart and I hate my hometown. Can I live in a Target state instead?

I'm in a Starbucks state, we refuse to go to Wal-Mart, we like to support our local community! Wal-Mart has tried to build in our city and they were denied, so they built right ourside of the city limits.

this is funny. My state is gray for both. I can't remember the last time I've been in Wal-Mart. I can, however, remember the last time I was in Starbucks. Yesterday. Target is so much cooler than Wal-Mart.

Definitely not a wallmart state. I don't even know where there's a wallmart near my hometown. There's one like 15 minutes from here. I know the locations of a few starbucks though, even though I hate them and coffee. There was one upstairs in this office building.

I think it's funny (not directed at people on here AT ALL, just at people in general) when people "refuse to shop at Wal-Mart because it closes down small businesses," then LOVE Target! The last time I checked, Target is definitely NOT a small business! I personally prefer Target, but it's because I like a lot of the products (home furnishings, clothes, etc.) they sell at Target better.

Also, even though I don't like Wal-Mart, I think people need to recognize that it does provide a valuable service. I shop at Target because I CHOOSE to. Some people have to literally watch EVERY SINGLE penny they spend, and Wal-Mart is the only place they can afford to shop.

I'm not saying they provide low prices out of the goodness of their hearts, just that it's a reality that a lot of people actually NEED Wal-Mart.

Sorry to post a third comment, but I just checked out the Wal-Mart link. I see that it's just for Super Centers. I wonder how/if the results would differ if the other types of Wal-Marts were included.

Thanks, cubadog, I appreciate the invite! However, despite being in a Wal-Mart state, I live in a very cool town where it would actually cost more (in gas) to shop there instead of locally or at the nice, clean, Target ten minutes away. Yay for that!

Let's see in my hometown we have 2 Walmart Supercenters and 1 Super Target (with the Starbucks inside) and 2 other Starbucks that I can think of.

My state is the same color in both maps but that's bullshizz because we have 5 - count them FIVE - WalMarts in my town and only one Starbucks. Unless I guess if you count the Starbucks counters *inside* other stores. Then we have 3.

I hate Wal*Mart AND Starbucks.

It raises the question -- is it possible to change someone's political view with a cup of coffee? People in the red-states (Walmart states) get used to that stale, diner-style coffee. One taste of Starbucks liberates the mind!

I'm definitely in a Wal-Mart state. ½ mile to nearest Wal-mart. 45 miles to the nearest Starbucks.

Ugh, I hate Wal*Mart. I'm Not a huge fan of Starbucks, but I HATE Wal*Mart!

Yay Maryland! I'm proud of us for being a non Wal-Mart, pro Starbucks state. I really like Starbucks (it's the McDonalds mentality of wherever I go I always get the same tasting drink) and I hate Wal-Mart. I don't really care if they kill small town shops because that's capitalism and the market for you, but they are so gross and the people there are not helpful. I am all about Target!

i call a starbucks state home, but i'm going to school in a walmart state. i don't like either, but i won't refuse to shop at them, either. i like independent sellers, i love meeting the baristas and trying different version of drinks. and both companies are bad about fair trade. starbucks tried to look fair trade a while ago, but failed. nope, it's octane for my coffee and the farmers market for my groceries!

I agree it's funny that people are all down on Walmart for it corporate commercialism and how it hurts small business & then say how much they love Target. If you're gonna be down on one, why would you support the other???

Now if you were just saying you liked Target better for their PRODUCTS that would be different.

Lilkimbo! You are so right, it's just an elitist thing! I live in a Starbucks state, and I would die if I didn't, but I love Target. Not necessarily because of the small business aspect, but I do live in a small town full of small businesses that seem to go out of business pretty well on their own without the help of Walmart.

It's not that I love Starbucks that much, I'm just more comfortable with the idea of having my drink order readily available as compared to a jumbo pack of paper towels at hand.

Oh, and by the way, I'm starting to think citizen is the best sugar blog! Though I love them all, there are some really great posts on here, and you crack me up! xoxo

Starbucks state thank god! I don't like shopping at Wal-mart because it feels dirty, I hate the warehouse feel with the neon lighting, and the workers are rude (not that I blame them for how little they make; it's Wal-mart's fault, not theirs). There's never anyone to help you and you can wait in the return line for 40 minutes because they have one person working the counter. Anyway I like Target more because it's cleaner and feels nicer, the things are nicer (although pricier too).

Anyway-- I frequent local coffee shops and Starbucks. I love coffee. Anytime, anywhere, any kind.

I live in Mobile, Alabama and according to this I live in a Walmart State, but there is a starbucks on every major corner where I live. It seems like they just pop up overnight. We have 3 Super-Walmarts and 2 Neighborhood Walmarts. Looking in my telephone book, there are 12 major Starbucks. That is not including the one's that are inside Barnes and Nobels book store and Super Target. I don't really go to Starbucks because I'm 21 with a 5 month old so I try to watch what i spend. I don't find anything wrong with all the starbucks because apparently they are making alot of money to be building them everywhere.

I'm in a Starbucks state (more specifically a Starbucks city, NYC). We're also a Target state, as well, while I think New Jersey is more of a Wal-Mart state.

I loathe WalMart and Starbucks. I prefer local, non-chain coffee shops over Starbucks. I can't think of any Starbucks in New Orleans (excluding suburbs) anyway. Can't get coffee and chicory at Starbucks.
