Should Media Play Video of Marine Throwing Puppy Off Cliff?

If you haven't seen it already, you may not want to. I'm talking about the video of a US Marine apparently hurling a small, whimpering puppy off the side of a cliff. I just happened to witness this while watching my morning news.

Marine officials are calling the video, which has been taken off YouTube, "shocking and deplorable" and an investigation has been launched. Meanwhile, the alleged puppy thrower and his family have been receiving death threats. Comments on YouTube identified the man, in what is being called "cyber-vigilantism."

What do you think about the video?

Agreed. Why do you even post stuff like this? This is supposed to be a nice happy place! I could do without the knowledge of this.

I have no desire to see something this horrible and find it completely repulsive that the media thinks it is there duty to show it. It should not be shown anywhere.

I agree. Why the hell would anyone broadcast animal cruelty, or anything else illegal and upsetting. Now I'm officially pissed off for the rest of the day.

Here's the thing. I love animals, and I haven't seen this video but it sounds awful. A deplorable, awful thing to do. BUT. The media shows images and videos of death, torture, assaults, and beatings of people all the time. I think all of it should be pitched, but graphic and unnecessary grisly footage depicting PEOPLE being harmed needs to go first. Sometimes when bad things happen to animals, we forget this. Horrible. But a puppy, not a person.

First of all, they don't know where this happened, the marine is stationed in Hawaii now, it could have happened there or anywhere as far as we know.

Second of all, it's news. A member of the military abusing an animal in uniform? That is actual legitimate news and should be reported on. Maybe they shouldn't show the video in its entirety. I think screen shots would have been more than enough if they really felt the need to have a visual.

As for the threats, of course that's going to happen. He did something horrible and promoted it. It's the internet, someone out there is gonna know the guy and how to find him.

Oh, and she posts things like this because this part of the community covers the news. It's the NEWS, go to the other sites if you're so offended by reality.

I dont remember ever seeing images of death, torture or assault on my news, but then again thats why I never watch the news anymore. I stopped watching the news after the Somalia incident. Some of these things I just dont need to know or need visuals for. Sometimes my life is depressing enough without it.

Is there really nothing better to do when stationed on a military base, than to throw dead puppies around?

It doesn't matter to me whether the animal is alive or dead just like if it were a person. No normal person would ever abuse a corpse in that way it is wrong no matter the species.

I was watching the news this morning and saw that they were about to show this and I immediately changed the channel. They can talk about this without showing it.

It always amazes me when people say they never show death and assault on their news because I'm thinking where the hell were you when they killed Sadam Hussein's sons? The pics of them all shot up and bloody were EVERYWHERE! Our media doesn't care they'll show anything. This is why our society is so desensitized!

absolutely disgusting. its the people who harm animals that you should really be afraid of. these are defenseless living beings, and they choose to take out their rage on them, sickening.

and no, the news should not be showing the video. i say yes to calling attention to the issue so the bastard is punished, but i dont know that we all need to SEE it to know it happened. Sad

StefaPie is right...this is a news site. And unfortunately, this is news. There is always a "line" between informing the public of a deplorable act and sensationalizing something in order to get ratings. It's hard to report on an issue without going too far.

But if we didn't see things like this, or other horrible things going on in the world...how would we ever know they happen? People like to pretend that everything is great, they like to wake up to their sunny days, drive to work in their nice little cars, eat a wonderful lunch and have a wonderful day.

The truth is, people do awful, awful things. It should be reported. If we become too desensitized or complacent to what is going on in the world....then we're in big trouble.

j2e1n9, I remember when I was a young kid around 12 years old, and seeing an African man getting axes thrown into his back on the news. He was lying lifeless on the ground, and a mob of people surrounded him throwing weapons at his back. I guess there must have been a warning, but I didn't hear it while I was flipping channels. It has stayed with me to this day...I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. I was completely chilled by the image, but perhaps it was good for my young suburban mind to know how lucky I was to live in a stable country. I still don't know what to think about it.

The thought of this video nauseates me, so I have been lucky to not see it yet, just pictures. I do agree with the poster that said that since he is in military uniform, it makes this a special case. I think the news should report the story, but perhaps they don't need to show the actual video.

it is super sad to see a cute puppy being killed & obviously i'm not justifying it but u have to remember this is a war & that same soldier has probably killed people too... war is sad, people die every day on both sides. its sad that a cute puppy dying gets more attention than the many people killed

I want to throw up. I have to question the intentions of showing something like this on the news. To make people aware there there are military men & women who are insane? To rile up animal-rights activists into a frenzy? Just for lack of wanting to show anything we NEED to know? I picked "if it helps find him" because I'll be forever scarred by the sheer thought of this if it helps find this waste of life and punish him.

the idea of this video makes me sick (i refuse to watch it and luckily haven't caught it on the news) but this did make me think of a book i read a year or two ago. i believe it was called "from baghdad with love" and it was about a soldier in iraq who rescued a dog from the streets and what they had to go through to get the dog back to the states. i distinctly remember him saying in the book that the military requires that all stray animals are shot and killed for security reasons (the soldier was terrified of his superiors finding the dog, or a fellow soldier finding him and shooting him.) so while i don't know and don't really care whether or not this soldier was in the middle east when this happened, i think it's kinda hypocritical for the military to get involved. kinda smells like they're doing it just because they knew the american public would be outraged. yes, one can argue that shooting an animal in the head is more humane than throwing it off a cliff, but it seriously sounds like the military is trying to save face by launching an investigation into.

one thing i do find funny is how we all are outraged when animals are killed and abused but are fairly desensitized to people being murdered and such. no judgement, i'm the exact same way, but it is kind of an odd phenomenon.

I find the comments speaking about only happy images which should be seen or broadcast truly disturbing. Yea, this incident and millions more like it are heinous, evil, disgusting and disturbing. But you can't squeeze your eyes shut like a child and imagine it doesn't exist. If things are reported then the general population doesn't know and cannot make informed decisions. We NEED to know what's going on in the world, in our country and on our streets.

Censorship of any kind is wrong. Tidalwave, you are so right. Lol at "ignorance is bliss".

For one, this is the NEWS portion of the Sugar sites. For two, life is NOT pretty and perky and edited of all things that make your tummy hurt.

What I dislike most about the Sugar sites is that "things that don't make for a happy place will not be allowed". If anyone dares speak up with passion in disagreement with someone, 10 people will attack them for "not being nice". It's such an antiquated view of the world and how women are "supposed" to behave. Asking for civility is one thing, but people who don't watch or read the news because it's "too sad" sicken me. To me, that is the same thing as saying "I'm not voting because it doesn't affect me." Everything that happens - everywhere - is added to the melting pot of life, culture and history and if you don't speak up when you see atrocities and wrongs, then who will?

We are not little children who should be allowed to remain innocent and enjoy the fun of life. We are adults and it is our responsibility to educate ourselves, our children and our world. Stand up for what you believe in.

What do I believe in? People who hurt animals usually move on to hurting people. Killing in a war is something you signed up to do and while it is hard, it is their job. It is NOT their job to hurt "cute little puppies". If this is the military's position, it needs to be looked at. We need harsher laws, not only for everything, but especially for animal abuse. This man needs to be punished.

I don't have a problem with them reporting it. I do have a problem with them showing it - that is in extremely poor taste. Liberty did a fantastic job of describing the video without subjecting us to it, for example.

A man that would harm a puppy like this fits right into the description of someone that would have severe psychological issues and should probably not be in service to this country with a gun.

But I'm pretty convinced at this point that this is a hoax. I still haven't watched it, but from what I can pick up about it... there are several men there besides him and they barely reacted at all. The puppy apparently whines or howls when tossed, but I think it wouldn't really make any noise at all. Plus, from what I understand, the video cuts away for a second before he throws it so that would be a good opportunity to switch it out for a fake dog. I don't know - I'm hopeful this is fake. Even if it is fake, it's still not at ALL funny but I'm going to give the guy a benefit of a doubt and assume he's just an insensitive and immature ass.
