Putin: There Is a New Arms Race

Russian President Vladimir Putin said it is clear that a new phase in the arms race is unfolding. On Russian national television, he rebuked NATO and the US for NATO's military expansion toward Russia's borders. Putin said that NATO is ignoring Russian concerns, and Russia will retaliate and address these new challenges.

Putin maintained that his country is not to blame for the new arms race. Rather, it is the other countries that are spending much more than Russia on new weapons. Due to rising oil prices, Russia can increase investment in its military, and it is clear that Putin intends to do so.

Putin is serious about putting Russia back on the international stage. How do you feel about a re-assertive Russia? Does the world benefit from having multiple superpowers asserting their diverse interests? Or do you fear a return to the divisions of the Cold War, when there are so many other things to worry about now?

Putin scares me and so does the fact that Russia has the world's largest group of neo-Nazis and it's still growing.

We have to be careful with Russia. They like to build up their military and that is what they will Put-in all their rubles to purchase new tanks.

I actually admire Putin for pulling Russia together at a time where it could have easily fallen apart, and he chose to not run again for President. I lived in Russia for a while and I got the feeling that everyone loves Putin, they see him as a strong leader who reflects well on the nation.

Meh lots of countries have problems. I like Putin Smiling

Is anybody surprised by this sort of hyper-aggressive and psycho behavior from Putin anymore? It seems like everything he does is intended to bring Russia one step back to the good ol' Soviet days with the KGB and stockpiling up nuclear arms.

That concerns me that he is purportedly popular with the people over there. No wonder he's able to get away with all the sh*t that he's been doing.

It is beyond me that anyone can say anything good about Putin at a time like this. There is NO freedom of speech. There are NO candidates running except Putin's puppet, a crazy communist and a total unknown. The guy that did stand a chance and raised 2 million signatures weren't allowed to attend. In fact he is probably in danger as we speak. And what about Chechnya? What about the raging nationalism? What about the corruption? What about withholding electricity from entire countries, in the winter time, to up the prices? Kremlin is broken. Putin is seeking to run the country for at least 4-8 more years as Prime Minister. It is nothing short of insane.

I have friends that work for humanitarian organisations in Russia and they are outraged but gagged, as are the whole state. What about writers, artist, journalists, politicians, social workers that are deprived their work? What about the growing population of poor? What about the crowded jails that contains hordes of teenagers charged for stealing food and other petty crimes, because they were starving? They get 8-15-20 years for stealing food. Tatjiana, there is nothing to celebrate.

trésjolie, I agree 100% about everything you just said. It's sad to see how people forget about Chechnya, the corruption and the complete lack of freedom of speech there's in Russa nowadays. Since Anna Politkóvskaya was killed, I was hoping for a stronger reaction from the rest of conutries from the European Union, but saldly nothing happened.
